    gas strut info please

    Hi Guys.
Ive just finished installing the camper top on my camper trailer. The people I bought the top off supplied 2 gas struts that they use on their trailers. They worked fine with no top on but are only JUST up to the task with my setup, mounting points are identical to theirs so the geometry is good.I struggle to lift the top and they only just take the weight off me once underway. These are 1000n force and there are 2.
I had a set of longer struts with 2000n force, tried fitting them but couldnt close the lid,not even budge it,plus it was too high when fully opened.
Any thoughts on how to work out what force struts I need??? there is a bit more canvaswork that also goes on the top also whilst travelling.

Hi Andy, we get our gas struts from UES, pity there isn't a branch in Perth although I am sure they mail order. They seem very competitive price wise and a good product. They are very helpful technically.

    Erich.
We do have UES in Perth(Malaga) I use them a bit.
What I need to know is lift capacity.
Just looked on Ebay, have seen struts with 1200n and 1400n the same length.
Am I correct in thinking these would be 20% and 40% stronger in lift than mine???? I believe 1000n equals 100kg lift???,correct????
About to order the 1400n,they are only $50 a pair delivered.

    Strut calcs

    Andy.
I went through this process last year retro-fitting struts into my camper. If you want to send me the geometry of the camper, I can work out the pressure needed to lift the top. I'll PM you my mobile number if you want to discuss.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Chris.
I ordered a pair of 1400n thinking they would lift 40% more force.
They were only $50 a pair delivered so I will see if they improve it.
    Cheers

When I changed my small camper from a fixed top to lift up, I took a guess on strut force, but made the mounting brackets with a range of different mounting positions. Its suprising what a small change in geometry can do to the opening/holding/closing effort required.

I did have a seperate hole 1" away,it made the effort much harder.
Cant really bring the struts lower as they impinge on the cargo space(sliding items out the rear door).
    Thanks.

A very timely thread as the Alfa's hatch strut lost all pressure on the weekend.

Thanks all for the useful info.

The strut has a strutmasters sticker on it so I'll start there.

    Cheers

    Steve
