    Auto-dim mirror repairs

These arrived with the last of the Classics, and have continued breeding, the P38 sporting them on the exterior as well, in some models/markets. Naturally, that's 3x the chances of one failing, as I understand the early ones do...

Buying 2nd hand is not always a viable option, as the majority of failures seem to be a design/materials/manufacturing fault.

I've replaced my (working?) interior mirror with an Old Fashioned 'prismatic' from some unknown wreck. - the windscreen mounting fitting being the same size & shape. I can live without the 'Map Lights'.

For me, the Gold Standard in a dipped mirror is the ability to attenuate HID or LED hi-beams down to bright parking lamps. - I'm Grumpy Mature Man, so my opinion may be coloured somewhat...

My Classic's mirror doesn't go anywhere near that, even on "Full". Tell-tale green lamp still works, and there is a measure of response so the electronics must be doing something. - I suspect the Magic Mud has died, or the design never reached that level of performance from new. - don't know....

Anyway, the company that made the OEM ones is out of business, and I've found another that offers repairs/replacement of the glass element. Visit their website and have a look..

Below is the reply I received from them. Price is very reasonable, considering return postage to Oz. - They're not gouging us the way some US firms interpret 'shipping'.

Note that this is for glass replacement and assumes the electronics ARE 100%-Repairing them is extra...

"We can repair your mirror for $144 including return shipping to Australia. It will operate normally and will not fail again. You can order here"
