I wouldn't use gal unless you line it otherwise you will get sick of everthing in them going black.
Hi all,
I've been looking at a Draw System / Stroage system for some time now. I had a Black widow in my Troopy when i bought it and sold it with the Storage.
I'm not keen to pay out $1500-2000 for a commercial system as they seem to last no longer than a "good" home made system.
Does anyone have any plans or ideas we can throw around.
I'm looking at a few different options.
Steel Frame
Timber Draws or Gal Boxes (supercheap) or if i can find a sheet metal worker/buddy i'll bend up my own. (i'm a sheetmetal tradey out of the trade)
Plywood over MDF as i dont need to play with anymore fiberous products.... AC sheet i used for years...
I thought of plastic Tubs, but finding quality ones are hard... and not cheap.
I've turned my Disco into a 2 seater so the Cargo barrier has been moved forward to the front as much as i can.
I'm looking at making a set of shelfs/draws for the Std Size back, then making a lift up lid section that can be removed in case i want to put the rear seat back.
I'm toying wit the idea of it being as high as the side windows, but then when i pile crap on top it might do damage, so i might put a cage over the windows, Just light 1" sqr mesh. Hey then i'll put Police stickers on it and call it a Divey Van..... Ha Ha...
I'm looking for Pix and any idea's...
If it turns out nice i might just make a few and sell them at a Nice price.... Not $1500.
So give me some idea's

Hey im a ex sheety too
I have been doing the same thing with my 130 ute. Thinking about it that is. I have decided about 20mm square tube will do the trick for the frame, which is basically a flat top with legs and weight distribution on the bottom so it dont go through the floor.
Then i will get some steel roller bearings and 30x20 tube to make the rolling system.
The actual draws i dunno bout yet prolly just 1mm sheet to keep weight down.
make sure you go and have a look at commercial ones and pinch there ideas like flush handles and rubber grommets holding the self in place when its closed.
Hope that helped, ask me more if you want
Hi,
My Background is a Refrigeration / Airconditioning Mechanic.
I've been out of the trade for about 10 years now. But it's time to get back into it.
I'll be starting up my own business in Car Aircond then getting into bigger
Commercial Fridgy stuff again.
Anyhow. I'm in need of a Sheetey in Melb or Geelong who can help me out. I'll do all the hard work i just need to use the Equip.
I'll pay of course. In Beer if they want....
So anyhow, Back to the Design.
I might think about stripping out the Rear Trim and making larger pockets where the Rear seats in the 7 seaters go.
Mmmmmm let me think...
Ohh i think i scored some Ply for FREEEEEEE.... Yippy....

What about fish boxes, they the size you're thinking of ? Would make the frame over them much cheaper as you won't need roller tracks like the commercials. You'd have to measure one to see lengthways how many could fit easily in the back to allow for the frame. They'd hold a bit of gear and you could make lids for them out of ply so they could be stacked and nothing get crumpled. I just don't know how much they are, just a thought that came to me.
You were thinking of a lift out/up section in the old rear seat section so maybe again use fish boxes so you could lift stuff out unless you want to make it a permanent thing then I guess a steel frame pit type thing would be the go. Full width rectangular box with piano hinge lid that lifts forward against the cargo barrier to make the space more usable.
Have you an idea where you want stuff, bit shooting in the dark here.
I.ve just finished knocking up some drawers for the Defender out of ply. Fridge slide is a drawer from a computer rack, and he main drawer slide came from Hettich (I think) a couple of years ago.
Not sure if the fridge slide will remain as is but we've had a partial trial pack and it looks OK so far (5 of us when we go away)
The drawer will handle 50kg at least (but I didn't want to push it further)
General view
Fridge Slide
Supporting 50Kg
Hidden compartment, Probably for spares?
Fixed via load barrier mounts
Ready to put to work
I've got a few finishing touches to go yet, fridge tie downs, padding to stop it sliding around in the drawer. I will then knock up a couple of custom boxes out of light ply to hold some of the gear we take (billies, gas cooker etc)
The fridge slide is held onto the base by 4 bolts into "T" nuts as are the slides and the drawer runner (these are locktited in).

Watching this topic with interest - am looking for storage solutions for the trayback ute. Sick of having stuff just jump about and those cargo nets are a PITA. Besides, the tray needs some work anyway (small incident involving a tree)....
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

G'day volvo, I've got a homemade set of drawers in my disco. I used 16mm ply for the base and 18mm ply for everything else. 2 drawers, one slightly bigger than the other (can't rember exact measurements), to the height of the rear windows. I screwed it all together with a hell of a lot of 10 gauge stainless steel screws, didn't want it to rattle apart on corrugations. So far I haven't screwed it to the floor of the disco yet, but before I undertake any long trips I will have to do that.
The runners were telescopic I think 450mm full extension with a load capacity of 40 kgs. I think I've got more than that in mine and have no problems, at a cost of $27 for two pair.
I used stainless steel marine flush pulls to open the drawers and stainles steel lockable flush bolts to keep them closed, These were about $17 each for the pulls and I think the locks were about $40 each (fortunately mine fell off the back of a truck) 8)
I covered the lot in marine carpet from Bunnings, which cost about $30 per meter.
They came up looking pretty good, and hold a hell of a lot of gear.
I'll post some pics at the end of the week. (need to get some film developed)
If you like them I'll give you a rough plan for making some, I'm a timber joiner and did them basically from my head as I went.
Hafele make some great drawer runners.... up to 100kg's, I think I have the 50kg ones in my car though....
