    Which oils should I use?

Which oils should I use in my 86 diesel County.

I think the previous owner was using Castrol GTX diesel oil in the engine. What type of oil is this (mineral, semi-synthetic?)?

I have no Idea what he was using in the gearbox or transfer case. What type, weight and brand should I be using?

    Cheers

For the g/box and t/case I use BP Visco 2000 (as per the book). No problems since I have been doing my own servicing for the last 18 months.

Hi, i use all caltex oils as when asking the same question as you i rang the landy dealer in bathurst and they told me that caltex forumlates oils especially for Discovery manual gear boxes- not sure about county- if you rang caltex autralia and ask for the tech help centre give them the vehicle details and they tell you which oils in their product range you should use. As for the transfer case and diffs, they recomend 80W90 gear oil for the disco, not sure on the county, i wouldnt think it would change meuch but id check it out. Just make sure you use a reputable brand, like Caltex, Castrol, Penrite, Valvoline etc, I normally use castrol but i swapped to caltex when land rover told me about the oil they make and i bought 20ltrs of each oil i needed for the same price as 20ltrs of just the gear box oil in castrol- $320 for 20lts. Good oil but if you are working on a budget you can only buy the best you can afford. Matt

    I just found the answer

"The LT85 has an oil pump inside, the reason for the 15W40 is that the pump cannot handle the thicker oil and will be damaged."

    Cheers Guys

When i was looking at buying the transimision oil, the repco guy rang castrol and the tech as castrol said to use VMX 80, but i guess that is a case of who you speak to. The oil companies i spoke to, ie valvoline and caltex, not sure on castrol, recommened the same oil in the transfer case as in the diffs, so i use Caltex 80W/90 Gear Oil in the lot. Matt
