Hi,
I use Ozi explorer on an Android tablet and does all I need.
Have a look at Westprints 1:1000000 map of Australia, and Explore Oz 1:200000 maps availble on sd card.
They are excellent products.
Cheers
Not sure where to put this topic. The folks are nearing retirement and plan to start touring about the place in their newly acquired 2010 Hilux. After going to ARB the other day Dad walked away with a $20K wish list, one of the items being a $700 Hema Navigator... but if he wants all these toys he's got to start investigating cheaper alternatives.
I notice Hema has a $50 app for Android devices which could be a promising alternative as Mum has a Samsung Tablet of some sort and I know it has inbuilt GPS. Can anyone give this app the nod of approval? Reviews seem to be extremely polarised so I hope to find out why this would be... hmmm.

I purchased the Hema Maps for my Samsung tablet and it looks really good and is very detailed. It even has toilet locating when on highways ( the missus was impressed).
There was a special on recently where they where including some extra maps ie Fraser Island and Vic High Country and others for free. The special may still be on.
I bought a Ram Mount that attaches to the seat bolt and I am ready for the next trip.
I haven't joined Ozi explorer yet but will do in the near future.
You can use a demo for free for a short time, but if you want to use it long term you need to pay, and I haven't downloaded it to try before buying it.
I recently used oz I on a cheap aldi tablet for my recent Simpson trip. I used it with blue tooth gps but others in the group used the inbuilt gps in the same tablets. I would say that it is a proven product.
1:250k maps are freely downloadable from ga.gov.au , the best ones are probably the zone mosaics ie zone 55 is one map.
Ozi is only $25 once you have the tablet plus you can have plenty of other apps to make it more versatile.

Im running the Hema explorer app on my samsung s5 and other devices its a great app but the biggest issue I have is on my s5 I cant save maps to the external SD card. This is due to google updating the security or some such crap but I was informed this was meant to be fixed in an update from hema but the update was released on the 21st but still same issue.
However on my s3 I can download to SD card without issue and it works great.
Just make sure your device isn't running Android 4.4 I believe as that doesnt allow writing to sd card
You're correct on the (default) behaviour of Android 4.4.x disallowing write access to the SD card.
Provided you can enable root access to the device, however (minor degree of difficulty, but might void warranty), you can re-enable write access via a selection of Apps on the Play Store.
I have just done this on my Note 10.1 that I upgraded to 4.4.2 last week.
