injector cleaner additive
Hi guys
I have a 300 tdi disco
it has 225 km on the clock and I am wanting to know if the diesel injector cleaners you can get to put into the fuel work or are a waste of money ?? I was advised to run two stroke oil in fuel !! Whats the go with that ? I remember a trucky once saying he puts engine oil in his diesel which acts as am injector cleaner .
so what do you guys do
Cheers dustin

Try cleanpower from costeffective.com.au. I've used it in my td5 and in a 2.2l (200,000 km) hilux. Works well and yes, its cost effective. Also have used their flushing compound. Took out the sludge in the hilux and now have clean oil in a 32 year old diesel. Additional power so it can now pull the skin off a rice pudding.

While 'success' for these kinds of additives is not easily measured (mostly it just makes you feel good in the cockles of your heart), I've been using the Liqui-moly stuff for ages in a turbo petrol vehicle. They make a good range of additives for diesels too.
Oil flush, injector treatments, fuel tank treatments etc.

My two cents worth?
96 Discovery 300TDi with 420K k's. Due for next service.
Decided to try Injector cleaner in last tank of fuel before service and new oil.
Could not get my preferred brand of cleaner so settled for what was available.
I ended up with Gulf Western Diesel Injector Cleaner not expecting to see any noticeable results.
Results unbelievable!
It actually feels like it has a turbo now (first time since owning it, had for 12 months). Runs/idles smoother, and is actually quieter.
I put the complete 375ml bottle into about a half full tank of fuel, have done 3 trips of 100k's at about 100k\hr.
My injectors must have been #*%^#.
Was not expecting to see this sort of change. Don't know if it is because this was the first time I used an injector cleaner and/or the brand actually works.
From my experience this week give it a try:

Most/All injector cleaners are just solvents or lighter oils:
e.g. MSDS analysis reveals the active ingrediants are Naptha/Toluene/Xylene/Kero.
i.e. - zippo fluid and paint thinner
They *may* have some cleaning effect - they are solvents after all, however they will also produce a change in engine performance while they are in the tank due to changing the properties of the fuel.
You could likely produce a similar cleaning action and change in performance by putting 0.5L of PULP in the tank.
Note that all the above products will reduce diesel fuel lubricity. The suggestion to add 2 stroke to diesel is *supposedly* to increase lubricity.
Also note that biodiesel blends have both higher lubricity and higher solvent action than regular diesel.
