    Oil Leak from engine?

    Hi everyone,

    I own a 7 seater petrol V8 Discovery 2.

I was wondering if someone could tell me whether oil leaking from the black case thing on top of the engine is bad, or really bad (i.e. $$$ )

I'd search on the forum but I don't know what that black case is called. The oil as you can see in the photo is coming from the bolt. Same on the other side as well.

Thanks in advance and apologies for not know what that is called.

That thing is called a tappet cover or rocker cover. Check to see if the bolts are loose. If they are tight get a new gasket to fit under the cover.

Thats not a leak, its a weep at best - give it a wipe and see if it returns.

I should have added that it had just been degreased / cleaned by the mechanic.
I think it's now dripping oil onto the driveway.

That looks more like grease than oil, if it was an oil leak it would be coming from between the valve cover ( black box thingy ) and the cylinder head ( shiny alloy thingy ) so just check where its is coming from and if its not visually dripping then its only a minor annoyance and nothing to worry about.
Gaskets are cheap and easy to replace yourself.

They leak if the breather plug on the top of the cover is blocked inside.
The Rocker cover gaskets aren't dear, PM us if you need some. Not a hard job if your handy with some tools/

They can leak from the bolt. If the gasket is damaged only to the bolt hole and not to outer part of gasket, oil can travel up the bolt and leak.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
