    Winch "Demonstration"

    I was just watching the latest 4x4 action DVD. They have an advertising segment showing a winch pulling some trucks across a flat car park. They start off with 2 cabs and a trailer. Then add an excavator and finally another cab, for a total 'pull' of 73 tonnes.

    Now that's all very impressive I'd agree, BUT, how much weight is that winch actually pulling, force wise? I realise it all has to do with rolling resistance but I'm clever enough to even know where to start working that out. People pull trucks across car parks for competition, so it surely can't be that hard?

    Wasn't sure where to post it's not really recovery related I don't think?

    The only force involved is overcoming the friction in the wheel bearings and rolling resistance of the tyres on the ground. The mass of the object isn't relevant as you are pulling at 90 degrees to the force of gravity. Although of course a heavier object will have greater friction in the bearings and other moving parts.

    As you say a 'strong man' can pull a bus or semi. I'm not sure the same 'strong man' would be able to pull a Landy out of a mud hole. So a bit of a pointless exercise pulling things across a flat car park. What would be more impressive would be winching an excavator up a vertical slope.

    did the winch look like this ?

    I'd like some real world facts & real world tests from these manufacturers
    like pulling a fully laden truck (with all the camping gear) up a slope from a bogged out mud hole. Or like from one of malcom douglas's episodes, where you find yourself in the unfortunate position, bogged on the beach with the tide coming in, and the only anchor point is your spare wheel, dig it, winch it, save it. Anyone remember that episode ?

    VW Had an add with a Toureg towing a 747 at 155 tons Nissan have upped that at 170 ton
    Looks impressive but thats all

    That tourag had 1/2 a tonne of ballast and lower diff ratios to do that add.

    So it was a massive winching effort and the back of the tojo didn't need anchoring to something?

    Dads pulled his disco across the pavement before with all the wheels locked up - now that's an effort.

    They reckon about 1/10 the loaded weight to pull something across the car park so the supposed 73T pull is only about 7.3T or 16000lbs.
