The TDI would be the best way . When i did it to my Classic i had a Ford Tranist engine in the motor. Blah really crap engine in a RangieQuote:

But when i put the TDI in it , my insurance went down alot as it was a Land Rover engine in a Land Rover car.
Also all the parts are off the shelf.
Also you may want to check the MPG (or what ever you have over there) as i think the 3.9L Izuzu is only a few MPG above the V8 so does really make it worth it.
Go Disco and get the box at the same time. Makes it all the bit easer.

Well that is what i used to do to mine.
We had the Classic Range Roiver over here with the 200 TDI and the 300 TDi. So the are a standard fitment, and you can keep the power steering and the AC, But depending on age you may have to trim the Bit of the Bulkhead under the Middle of the bonnett, not alot though.
You will also have to put on new gearbox and engine mounts.
You have to weigh up the fact that your Rangie is quite old (mine's the same year as yours) and is it really worth spending up to $10K on something that may be fuel efficient. I personally wouild just put up with the crap fuel economy, (I do anyway [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img] ) plus I have a 3.5 which is gutless compared to my 3.9 EFI I had in Aquarangie, let alone the 4.6 :!:
You need to really look into it and weigh up the costs and the long term savings, and plus iof the Rangie is really worth it (they all are, but if it needs extensive mechanical work), etc....

I put my chev V8 diesel into the Rangie in 1997/1998. If i was to do the conversion again i would look at a 300 TDI or ideally a TD5 with the ECU remapped. A complete donor car bought for the right price at an auction would work out cheaper because there is a lot of hidden costs.
1.Engine
2.Gearbox/adaptors may be required if non Landrover engine.
3.Radiator
4.Exhaust
5.Wiring mods(Glowplugs)
6.Engine mounts
7.Suspension upgrade as diesels are heavier than v8 petrol
8.Engineers certificate.
A brand new turbo 6.5 V8 chev is around $ 12000 - $13000. Wish i had bought one originally rather than a 6.2. Everyone basically told me it would not fit and should buy a landcruiser 8O .
Mind you i love the sound of a V8 so i have the best of both worlds [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

4bd1's are not that difficult to find at a truck wrecker. They were in the early NPR model trucks. The only thing you may need to change is the oil filter housing. I would use about 10l/100km in the county during highway driving.
I know a bloke who put a Toyota 3.5 truck engine in his 2 door RR. Did it himself. He kept the bell housing from the engine. He made a plate for the small end of the bell housing, another plate for the RR geabox. Bought about 100mm steel tube to fit between the two plates. Cut the tube long ways and welded flats each side of the tube so the tube was egg shapped. Welded that to the two plates. He did some other stuff to match the rover shaft to the toyota bell housing. It drives great.
However, I agree with the above. buy a disco rollover. I think the axles will even fit.
