RR Diesel conversion.

Has anyone converted thier Rangie to a diesel?
1.What sort of diesel engine is fitted?
2.Who did the conversion?
3.How much did you source the diesel engine for?
4.How much did the conversion cost?
5.Where you able to retain the power steering and A/C.
6.Was it a straight forward conversion?
7.Would the 3.9 Isuzu engine go into a Rangie with a 4 speed box?
8.Is this a viable conversion due to the huge fuel consumption of the 4.6 motor that I have?
9.Where is a good place to buy a diesel engine?

My Rangie is an 83 with 4.6 engine with the original 4 speed manual.

3.How much did you source the diesel engine for?

Alot

5.Where you able to retain the power steering and A/C.

Yeah

6.Was it a straight forward conversion?

Yeah, they put those engines in Rangie here in the Uk but not untill 1990

7.Would the 3.9 Isuzu engine go into a Rangie with a 4 speed box?

There is alot of compies in the Uk that do this so it must be easy to do

8.Is this a viable conversion due to the huge fuel consumption of the 4.6 motor that I have?

Ah you have a 38A, Nah not done it to that , most of the time have done it to a Classic rangie

9.Where is a good place to buy a diesel engine?

As you have a 38 A why don't you try and find a 3ltr BMW car Diesel as they put them in them anyway. then it would easy to sorce parts, and cheaper on insurance

Hi Malibu9
I would price out a Disco write off from a insurance auction.
If you are reasonably mechanically minded you should be able to do the job yourself.
You could then sell your motor/gearbox plus anything salvageable from the wreck and end up with a reasonably priced conversion.

Thanks for the replies. I have been chatting with Maggot on Outer Limits. Any more info is good. I hear that the 4BD1 engine out of a 110 is hard to find I was talking to one of the guys out at Land Vehicle Spares today and he said he has only seen 3 come through the wrecking yard in the last 20 years.

I'm just in the last stages (electrics!) of putting a 300TDi/R380/LT230T combination from a rolled 95Disco into a late 89 rangie.

I'd suggest doing it as LandyAndy says and buy a wreck - I bought mine from a local auction house. There are lots of things that come in useful from the wreck - including engine/TF box mounts, exhaust pipes, wiring harness, radiators/intercoolers. etc, etc.

If you don't mind the look of the Discos I'd just go and buy a 95/96 300TDi Disco and be done with it - they are incredibly good value at the moment. However, if, like me, you are not real keen on the look of the S1 Discos (and you need a project to get you out of the house) then buy a wreck. If going the TDi route - be aware that the late 300TDis had a fly-by-wire electronic control system that might take more sorting out - my "mechanical" 300TDi should in theory run if I energise the fuel cut-off solenoid and strike the starter!

There may also be some additional issues for you to sort out wrt the transmission tunnel clearances, but I'm not sure - someone else can probably advise you there.

The original post mentions an 83 RR - my guess was that the 4.6 was installed later to replace the 3.5 original. If this is the case then the BMW option may not be the best way to go.

I think the TDi is sounding like the go, as you said the rareness of the 3.9L Izuzu might make it costly, unless you are lucky enough to find a wrecked county. If that what you want keep searching, you are bound to find something eventually, let all the wreckers know you want one and have them keep an eye out. Matt
