Simply to provide additional info to pat's reply:

The deck of the engine block is the top surface to which the head is bolted.

Decked ... refers to the process of restoring the deck flatness.

I am sure that the factory engine will not have all that matching of components done. It should purr

With the photos, can anyone comment on what they see? I don't see much other than the discoloured crown and a little deformation around the top edge of the piston that looks like someone tried to lever it out with a screw driver!

Is the anything wrong with the small end/gudgeon pin?

Slug, that piston is well fubar'd. The top should be smooth, the combustion chamber as well. The bulb in the camber is reduced in height/size due to melting. The top outside edge of the piston should be square and nice and chrisp. it is actually now a raised edege right around it with some of the corner missing. The top of the piston got so hot the material let go and transfered onto the head.....all in all a very bad piston

As I understand it buffing wont help your problem it'll just make you more of a ******...

I happen to have a very large percussive persuader Im happy to come round and see if some concussive counseling and impact influence will sort it.

(just to keep it relevent to the thread)

you might want to have a look at the input shaft of the gearbox while the engines out.

yes the gudeon pin will not move back and forth freely now. The middle ring is seized into the piston for approx 1/4-1/3 of its dia.
