It's under fuelled. While that is safe on a turbo diesel, it doesn't help with achieving 120kmh.
Either the pump is set too low and/or the boost compensation isn't working.
110km/h is the speed limit on many of the nations Hwys. I could go into a few things regarding lack of speed and how unsafe it can be, but that would be taking from the point I was making.........
My info was in reference to post-distruction of said engine. I could do (pre-distruction) upto 125km/h with trailer on, in 5th on flat road (no head wind), at which point if I had foot to floor, the speed would not increase, but the egt's would.....well maybe the speed would increase a bees dick if I held it long enough but I dont like high egts......
now it maxs out at 110 with any slight breeze and when on flat ground, foot to bulkhead/throttle stop, no increase in egts........If holding 100-105 and I come to any rise, the speed will fall away VERY quickly and adding throttle does bugger all.
Re 5th, I am aware of the weakness. Most daily towing will result in 4th being used during any 5th gear run.....its a Landrover, not a Chev duramax..............

Like jakeslouw indicated, it looks like your not getting as much fuel as before.
You can easily confirm this by turning the fuel pin in the boost compensator a bit to increase fuel. It should only take about 1 minute to adjust and a few more to test (before and after) on a hill - warm up engine before hand.
very interesting thread, like others, just read it from start to finish
Puts my current engine problems into perspective
anyway, I hope it tweaks up ok
it fine, just a little down on power when asked under load. Plenty good when unloaded, but it is a light 110.
On another note, I just snapped my handbrake![]()
Oil level has dropped approx 500ml in 1800kmNo big puddles under vehicle. All sump bolts clean and dry. Sump plug as small drip formed on it. Im sure it leaks a touch, but not this much.....oil filter housing, on top is wet oily
, oil filter shows no sine of drips on underside. Engine mount has small drips forming on it and I think they could be dripping on top of the diff? Im thinking it is more when hot and reving that its loosing it....some of it could be dripping onto the propshaft and being flung around. All in all the engine is pretty damn clean and not showing any other signs than a little oily soot on the intercooler silicon bends, though these might be some PS from a small leak on the PS pump underside???
I just hope its not consuming it, ie burning it off or a turbo problem![]()
That's more than a moderate amount of oil usage, did you check the level with the vehicle standing in the same position ? I say this as any vehicle tilt will change the amount read on the dipstick.
If it is the turbo, you can easily check if it is leaking through it's seal, by undoing the bottom hose to the inter cooler and checking it for oil on the inside.
Then to look for a slight leak around the engine, use a clean white rag, pat it up underneath and any stains will soon show where the oil is accumulating.
.
yep checked in the same spot on the same driveway.
still using/loosing oil. It looks like it will be about 750ml/5000km. Im judging this by the info given in the LR workshop manual that the difference between Min and Max on the dip stick is 1ltr. I pulled the bottom hose from the turbo. It is a little oily, but I guess that would be expected from a tdi? Not enough to be pooling or sitting in the bottom of the IC. See pics, yep crappy light, bugger. There are a few oil steaks in the top of the top hose from IC to plenum.
On another note, I have found a pin hole leak in the main water pump/radiator hose. This is the multi ended/sized hose. It is rubbing against the power steering resiviour.....anyone know the part# for this hose?
with these things and the steering box needing replacing, im not feeling the love![]()
