    Alternator light issue

I've just bought a 87 RR with many problems. See earlier postings.

One of the problems is that the vehicle has twin batteries wired up by an ignition operated solenoide. Seems to work well, however, the charge light is always on. It does fluctuate sometimes but tends to dim when revs are lower not higher.

The batteries ARE being chraged. 13.3V is being delivered by the alternator consistantly.

I don't think its a problem with the alternator, maybe the jerry rigged wiring.

Can anyone advise what wires should go where on the back of the alternator. Its a 133/65 Lucas.

    Can't help with the wiring.

However with the warning lamp, some of things that come to mind

    Loose/dirty battery connections/terminals

Weak earth to the alternator, might need an earth wire from the block to the alternator as some use rubber insulators on the mounts. I had to install one on mine as the earth through the engine block was poor.

Might be a short to earth in the lamp circuit......somewhere.

Slipping drive belt but you would think it would squeal a bit at higher revs.

Least likely thought is the light was wired to be a pilot light to show the system is working when the dual setup was wired in. It'd be dumb I know as it would be less likely to be noticed when it went out than if it came on. That's the trouble with buying vehicles that have years of fiddling behind them.

Gives a starting point I hope......got a feeling has something to do with an earth connection though.

8O Must have different approach to clients in the city to the wilds. Every stealer (or mechanic for that matter) around that I've ever dealt with are happy for you to "bring it around and we'll have a look at it for you" which is done at cost, nothing is free. Which is fair enough I guess, they want to make a $ out of what they know but sorta shoots us "backyard mechanics" in the foot a bit when it's simple answer. Call up for the cost of an oil filter and they will only tell after they do the oil change for you.

Could be right about the charge rate. Wouldn't know, mines a external reg so I can set the float to anything I want within reason, currently it's 13.8~14.2 depending on load. So 13.3V could be a little low.
