Possible project - replacing d2 auto box switch mechanism with an optical setup

    Hi all.

    I got the M and S lights tonight..stuck in 3rd etc etc.
I was thinking about running the loom for the xyz selector box up through the pan, and using optical or prox sensors off the gear selector in the cabin as the 'switches' for the whole shebang.

I figured I could use fets or even small relays in a nearby location to do the switching - hell even a cheapish relay has a mbtf of a million cycles. Gotta be better than the xyz switch block

Ok, it will take many hours of dicking about but for not spending the 600 bucks for a replacement switch block I would have a water-agnostic gear selector system. I think the last swim I went for in the landy last month may have helped things fail.

I was thinking of arduinio-ing it...but..nah. I prefer discrete components.

    Possible?

It does seem a bit short on space in there under the centre console where the gear selector is, but I did find some really small prox switches on the interwebs that could be wedged in there.

Whaddya reckon? It seems like a good idea now with a scotch in the hand!

I reckon you need to switch to a single malt. The Scotch you're drinking is making you mad...

Seriously , if you have the expertise, why not? It's beyond me, but I'd be interested if you could make it work.

Thing is, though; mine started the M and S thing at around 280k's and at 300 it needed a rebuild. What's yours done?

Just done 203000k, And after a good nights sleep it's healed itself....for now. It logged a canbus fault.? I cleared it and all good again. So maybe not the switch after all but another connection or chafed wire somewhere.

Maybe you are right, electrically it's quite simple, but to get everything to line up will be a right pain. However, If i get bored enough it may happen...unless the wifey makes me sell it first.
