    Td5 not starting, clicks only

    Hello all,
My Td5 has stopped starting, my battery is charged and all I'm getting is a clicking noise when I turn the key.
The battery light is showing on the dashboard dies this indicate an electrical problem fuse etc, I've also just had the gearbox completely overhauled.
Could this be causing the issue?
This is what I've done so far.
-Charged the battery overnight, fully charged now, only took 45mins to charge.
-Removed starter motor and bench tested it, threw out the cog and spun like crazy, placed a load on it with a piece of wood and it kept spinning.
-Removed the back plate, the plunger and contacts were worn and dirty, I have ordered the parts to fix, may as well considering the starter is out already.
-Tested for power on big lead onto the starter, it lit up the test light so power getting to starter.

What else can I test once I put it back in, or any other ideas?

    Cheers
    Roy

I had the same symptoms with our daughter's TD5 Defender, finished up being a broken earth strap which on that vehicle goes from the chassis to the rear of the transfer case.

Is yours a Disco or Defender?

I've seen a kit like that from Melbourne, so hopefully will get here a bit quicker.
The bits in there ere quite worn and very dirty.
Would it just completely stop working from that though, and the Battery light stay on?

The earth strap (fat black wire) goes from the inner guard on the right front (under the battery cover) to a point on the engine near the right engine mount.

I would agree that your problem is related to the solenoid

Yes it would comletely stop as the click you hear is when the solenoid's plunger kicks in but it doesnt close the live circuit for the motor's winding as the contacts are so worn... and the battery light is normal to stay on as long as the engine is not running so there's no charging, that warning is for lack of charging and it's extinguished only by the running alternator(as long as it's not dead of course)
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned

How many k's has the vehicle done? Is it a good thing to replace at a certain stage before it fails if the kit is all you need for a quick fix.
