... and if you wear the brush... and some fingers... it's ok.

I think we're one step closer to an answer. The problem only rears when towing or extreme load. I took it for a good hard drive with the load off without any high engine temp problems. It passes the paint brush test. But I did a double check and the radiator hoses are seriously hard. So it looks like head gasket is leaking, probably helped along by 20 psi boost.

I believe it is the original gasket and head at 330k so I suppose I can't complain.

Tough luck. I was starting to think about putting my order in for the same turbo.

Sounds like a head gasket or head.

Fingers crossed that you get it going reliably.

My experience is different. I've just completed an 1800 km trip up and down the Qld coast with a fully loaded 300Tdi 110, campertrailer and tinnie. I was regularly sitting on 550 to 600 deg EGTs with water temps in the mid 90's

I have had the tropical mod done to my radiator, but did not see temps near 110

Very interesting. I've been considering trying the tropical mod. If it works as well as it sounds, then I would feel much more comfortable tweaking my TDI.

Did you pay to have it done, or DIY?

When I got my core replaced last year, I asked the radiator shop to block up the hole on the baffle plate and replace with a small hole. They didn't know why it was even there other than to cater for a cold climate. When I picked up the rebuilt rad, they said really the small hole wasn't really needed as the plate itself is not sealed on all sides as there is blowby at the edges, equalling any hole you could put there. The big hole in the baffle being closed over I feel has reduced the running temps overall, (though with a very slightly slower warmup time) - now the whole rdiator is being used at all times. Also, pushing 650 degrees on the EGT up a 10km long hill equals 95 around degrees at the head measured with TM2.

Thought of another potentially pertinent question.... What coolant ratio are you using? 50/50? 1/3?

Just premix Tectaloy 60 or 90, not sure what that's equivalent to.

    Update for those interested.

Viscous fan hub was rooted. Tried the paintbrush test again with a little less caution and was able to stop it dead and rotate it against the direction of drive.

Happy to have got out of that one cheaply! Time for more boost and fuel!
