Rear door mounts & wheel carriers

OK....I know there has been some discussion in the past as to the merits of the various manufacturers of wheel carriers, but....I want to hear from people who have actually had their rear door mounts fail. I recently read of a brand D90 which seemed to suffer from this problem.

What actually fails? Is it the hinges or does the whole door collapse?
How old was the vehicle/door after it failed and under what conditions/use?

$500+ is a lot of money for for a wheel carrier and can probably buy you numerous new hinges and even a new door???

Apparently the '02 MY are meant to be stronger, so it would be interesting to actually hear from people who have experienced this problem.

    Thanks in advance

    Regards

    Hi Noddy
This problem hasnt been fixed since they started putting them on the back of Series Landies.
They dont know what corrugations are in the mother country.Basically if you do most of your driving in good roads you dont need a wheel carrier, the factory setup is good enough. If you are doing the dirt you need a stronger setup, the backdoor isnt good enough.

My internal door frame was cracked when I checked it in 2002 and considering its an 85 model I think it did pretty good.

I have seen worse cracked ones on defenders though.

As for the rear wheel carrier, I made my own. You can a pic of it in readers rides. It was pretty easy really with the help of a mate with a welder it cost $50.

Has anyone had any dramas with the weight of the spare on the back of a Discovery. ATM I've got a 32" muddie, sometimes a hilift jack and soon a worklight setup hanging off the backdoor. I'm a little bit concerned about all this weight. :?

Noddy, search the archives, I wrote a bit of this earlier. Also, the Jan edition of Overlander covered this topic too. My advice is to get a carrier. It make the door easier to open too.

I read rmp's story in the January edition of Overlander. Has a couple of good pics of the carrier. I never thought they were worth the expense, however have recently changed my mind and will be investing in one similar to rmp before to long.

On the 90's and 110's Land Rover put three hinges instead of the two on series to try and fix the problem of the rear tyre pulling the door of. But this was ok with the standard 90 205 tyre on but if you went bigger then it did pull of the rear door
I had a Mantec rear carrier on the back of my 90, (before i made it pick up). This was great as it also mean't the door would saty open even on the angle.
As another problem with a big wheel on the back door is that the door saty is not strong enough to hold the door back and you find the door keeps shutting on its own, and hitting you in the back if you are unloading stuff from it

Oh i did have a 35" simex extreme treker on the back
