ZF auto clunks when engaging reverse.

    Hi all,

Great site, thanks for the feedback members have already offered!

My '95 Tdi Disco (226000Kms) automatic transmission tends to "clunk" when selecting reverse.

    Is this typical?
Do I have something loose in the drive train?

What do I do to fix it, if it is necessary to do so?

    Thanks

    Sean

the clunk is more likly slop in the transfer case drive shafts and diffs all combined to make the clunk.

have you checked all the suspension and drive line nuts and bolts for tightness?

they always work them selves loose enough to cause noises over due time.

my prop shaft bolts were all loose on mine at the handbrake drum...all the others were tight.

check all these and then see if it goes away.
if its still there there it could be a fault in the box, or a suspension bush worn allowing metal to metal contact etc.

so start with the easiest and cheapest options first then let us know how you went.

    good luck

Just wonder whether the idle is set too high, would make it go klunk.

i have mine idling high at 1000 rpm and no clunk ..

sounds like rear ball joint or general wear and tear.

mine klunks when slowing down and it is hot... be thinks i have some transfer case wear..

    clunking when selecting reverse

I will check the tightness of all the nuts along the driveline. I think my idle is on the low side so I don't think it is that.

As long as I am not doing some form of terrible damage I think I can live with it if it doesn't get any worse.

I'll see what happens after checking the nuts for tightness.!!

    Thanks

I was just wondering does it go clunk of you're rolling slowly when you drop it into reverse, like when you're about to parrallel park... go from drive straight up to reverse without actually coming to a complete stop ?

The band might need tightening up or am I still in the dark ages about that ? :?

The Mazda was an auto before I converted it to five speed. The auto used to give a fair 'bang' when selecting reverse when stopped but rolling it would just slide in gently. When changing the fluid on it's last service I tightened up the band a bit more. After that it didn't go 'bang' when reverse was selected even when stopped, however no long after that I converted to manual. So another worthwhile mod.

Hellspawn, I think the answer is "yep". Sorry mate, but I didn't have much of a clue either until things went pear-shaped for my tranny. My experience is if it doesn't work without clunks and jerks it is probably stuffed! If it is, apart from replacing the valve block if that turns out luckily to be the problem, it's down to the wreckers or a reconditioned box. Whatever, it will cost more than a few sheckles.
