    Tranny rebuild suggestions

    G'day,
I need to rebuild the tranny in my 1974 S3 SWB 2.25 Petrol.

Anybody have a suggestion on where to get it done? I live in Bondi.

Also, was thinking about putting in an Ashcroft hi-ratio gearbox if anyone has a used one or thoughts on those, I'd appreciate it.

    Cheers

Suppose I'm the most experienced here to answer this one, going on mine's broken something in the gearbox 9 times in the last 2 years. 8O

Why not have a go at it yourself ? Only a giant sized mechanoset, will only go back together one way.... actually no.... it will go two ways, I actually put the syncro hub in backwards for 3rd/4th, ops: will all bolt back together but it won't go into gear.

Luckily I checked everything so it was still on the bench when I realised. So if you do have a go at it yourself mark which way is front on the syncro hub.

If I lived closer you could drop it around.

All the high ratio gear sets are much of a muchness, they'll all up the overall drive, all you achieve is a higher road speed per engine RPM in any gear. I don't like them much though nothing wrong with the idea, just given off road situations as they often are, it makes it harder on your engine in high four with the gear set in than if it were standard. You're always going to be one gear too high for the situation unless you drop back into low range.

Be fine if you trot around on the bitumen all the time though, otherwise you'll be shopping around for a fairey overdrive.
