'84 RANGE ROVER STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL

    G'day All,

When driving staight my steering wheel sits at about 45 degrees from horozontal.......it's driving me nuts!!!!! Are these easy to remove & replace?
It's got four spokes if that makes any difference, and feels really hard to touch, is that normal?? Thanks Guys!

Sounds like the guy who did the wheel alignment last didn't line up the steering box with the wheels too well. By realigning the steering wheel all you're doing is hiding the problem. It'll cause no real problems, just if that's the case you'll turn tighter in one direction than the other as the steering box isn't centred with the straight ahead of the wheels.

If you're gonna take that steering wheel off why not replace it with a nice smaller sports one. It makes a wonderful difference....I no longer club my right elbow on the window sill when negotiating an 'inconvenient swerve in the road' (roundabout) in my shorty.

its not hard at all to correct the problem properly.

first you gotta disconnect the steering linkage centralise the steering box.
then you fit the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
now with the wheels pointing straight ahead you fit the steering link and adjust it to bring the wheel back to centre.

    have i confused you?

come over to my place and i will do it for you.

Not at all, and if its done properly the steering will self centre much better. According to the guy who overhauled my steering box not many vehicles are set up properly from new.

The other thing to consider is the the steering shaft being central.
Then the indicators will cancel correctly.

    Scott,
If the wheel is at angle, and the indicators don't cancel correctly, then the wheel alignment is incorrect.
Either that or something has gone astray in the steering box.

    It's not that dramatic.
If the front wheel alignment is OK, but not aligned with the rear, then the vehicle will crab.
If the the front agrees with the rear, then there are 2 options.
    1. Fix it.
    2. Put up with it.

    Huh!!!
The indicators cancelling is controlled by a small ring which has a bump, just behind the steering wheel. When you centralise the steering wheel make sure the bump points in the correct direction. I cannot clearly remember but I think its to the same side as the indicator stalk.
you can easily turn it with yur hand.
    regards Philip A

That bump sits at about half past two on my steering shaft.
