98 disco tdi - aircon problem

    Hi all,

I've got myself a 98 disco TDI, runs like a dream.....after I spent $4k on a new head gasket and timing belt....that's a story for another day!

When the guys (all4x4 kotara) fixed the head they noticed the air con compressor bearings were on their way out, they didn't fix this because I was already upset about the amount of money they were taking from me.......so they removed the belt.

So basically I'm hoping someone can give me some info, can I replace the bearing without removing the compressor or breaking the gas lines? Its starting to heat up and I'm going to be desperate for air con pretty soon and I don't think my wife wants me to spend anymore money on this "cheap" but amazing disco!

While the belt is off check the idler bearing first, thats the easiest one to fix. If its your aircon pulley bearing this also is not too hard, you can unbolt it off the front with the AC compressor in place. Bearing number is NACHI Bearing 30BG5222-2DSE. You will find it peened into place, carefully grind down the peens, press out and replace the bearing and re-peen it with a centre punch.
