2001 TD5 discovery after market driving lights

Does anyone know where, or if, there is wiring as standard for driving lights on a 2001 series 2 TD5? I have an ARB bar fitted.

A used rover parts supplier told me that there should be a harness somewhere at the front that the lights can plug into. I had a brief look and could not see what he described. He said the cable should be rolled up and somewhere under the washer bottle (left front corner).

A dash switch is available from land rover that replaces a cover plate on the dash.

    Any ideas are most welcome.

Hi barryj, I had both a series I and II and fitted driving lights to both but I never came across any wiring looms for driving lights.
Someone else might be more informed on the subject, but in both cases I had to fit my own wiring and relays.
    Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. This will save me a lot of time looking for something that may not be there. Probably easier running new cable, that way at least I know where it goes.

Hi again barryj, I don’t know if you have installed driving lights before but if you are going to do it yourself, try running 5mm or 6mm automotive wire and don’t both using the thin wire that usually comes with the driving lights. The thicker wire will give you brighter lights and the globes will last longer, paying for the additional cost of the heavier wire.
    Cheers.

Thanks again for the info. Yes we will run the cable as suggested. We fitted lights to my defender a few years ago. The discovery looks a bit more complicated, but we won't rush the job.

Have a look on the Range Rover Discovery US forum. there is the same question there today. Maybe its you !!!
You can use the wiring which IS there but if you use the switch and wiring, you apparently have to tell the ECU before it will work.
If you connect it independently, I see no reason to tell the computer. what it doesn't know won't hurt it.
    Regards Philip A

Thanks Philip, This is on the same thought as the land rover parts guy I mentioned (Tony at AJG Spares at Albion, Brisbane) . He said that if I tried to add to the system I would set off the vehicle's computer and could expect some alarms and odd warning lights. Maybe I should see Tony again and see if he can show me where the loom is. He is a very busy guy, as he would be supplying parts for Jags and Rovers and talking to novices like me!

Do you have the web address of the Range Rover Discovery US forum? I don't know that one.

Hi barryj, in my series II, from inside the engine bay, just bellow each headlight was a two wire loom and plug. I could not get the wire powered as there was no fog light switch in the dash. I decided against using this loom as the wire was to light and still had to be connected at some point to the headlight high beam wire and it was easier to just run a wire from the back of the headlights to the relays, I didn’t both putting a switch in to isolate the driving lights from the high beam.
    Cheers.

thanks drivesafe, I'm wiser now than before.

It should be ok to add to the system from what I see, but not use existing wires. I plan to buy a genuine switch from Land Rover, around $25 from what I know, to isolate the driving lights from the high beam. I think it is illegal not too in Queensland. On a practical note, I would like to isolate the driving lights and only use them on trips.

I have a battery isolator to fit so I can charge my camper trailer battery while driving and also to run a fridge while driving. This will be independant of the system so should not prove too difficult. I had a marine electrician around this morning for a coffee and he gave me some good ideas. He will check what I have done before I power it up, great mate to have. I will owe him something for sure. He owns a boat so I guess I will have a paint brush to wear out soon!

Any other experiences are most welcome as they might be of interest to others.
