    300tdi timing - questions

    hey all,
just changing the timing belt today (fist one) have a few questions:

1- the camshaft pulley has a white mark on it?
2- bottom bolt from the cover plate (see pic) has oil on it, is this normal?
3- 2 bolts to the left and it has what looks like white paint is this normal ?

    cheers James.

The white paint shouldn't be there so just ignore.
The oil will be the crank shaft seal or cam seal leaking.
Looking at the timing cover I'd say crankshaft.

Have you got the timing pins etc ?

The cam pulley timing mark should have lined up with the casting mark, near the left arrow in your pic.

    hey jboot
yep have the timing tool kit,
yep have now aligned both markers.

is it necessary to remove the ac condenser and front grill, so you can view the markers at eye level ?

the sump gasket looks pretty stuffed too

I use my phones' camera to get in there and take a few snaps, works quite well.

Don't forget the fibre washer that fits on the timing cover, sort of in the middle left of centre.

Sump doesn't normally have a gasket, just silicone

Well it looks like we've been doing the same thing today

With the engine at TDC on the compression stroke this is what the front of the engine should look like.

The two green arrows point to the timing markers which should be lined up. The cut down bolt, pink arrow, 'pegs' the injector pump so that you don't lose the injector timing. The third point of reference is the 'timing peg' locating a slot in the flywheel.

From your photo it looks like you're 180 degrees out, ie you're at TDC on the exhaust stroke.

Do you have a timing peg in the bottom of the bell housing locating the timing notch in the flywheel ?

By the book no, but one is available and seals things up nicely.

Are your old belts aligning properly, meaning no wear along the belts edge?

And firsttracks, no there is no need to remove radiator and condenser. The belts teeth are coarse enough that it you were a notch out you will see it.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

That fibre washer, would I be able to get it at my local auto shop? I can't see it online anywhere?
