I wouldn't touch it. If it went off, you may be prosecuted.

Why not buy an air tank from KMart. There has been a thread on Overlander last week about KMart selling them quite cheaply.

    Hi Guys
I cant see a problem using them, the ones I have are rated to 90psi,and the 2 new ones are rated to 130psi.
The biggest problem is the connects are in the centre of the top which would make the condensate removal tricky. All you would need to do is modify the liquid pickup tube so it draws from the bottom corner.
The ideal air tank would be a truck airtank. The 6 wheelers at work have 3 tanks each,of ideal size.A visit to a truck wrecker would be worthwhile.

Where are you going to keep the beer!!

Then again If you decide do you ahead with it.... I'd be more than happy assisting you in the emptying of the soon to be air tank!

I'm just wondering on what and for how long you'd want that much air. That's a heap of stored air and would take a very long time to come back to pressure unless you have a fair compressor on it.

Planning for plenty of bad luck with changing tyres ?

    Hi Jay
When pumping your tyres up after the beach you would already have your tank at 100 psi or so,you pump all the tyres up alot quicker than normal and your compressor needs to work alot less. Also normally there is more than one in the party that hasnt a compressor so there is quite a break before everybody is pumped up and ready to go.

i think the compressor would do the same amount of work.....it still needs to pump the same volume of air.

but you will have enough compressed air on reserve to, lets say blow out an air filter for example. which you cant do with just a compressor as i wont pump the volume required.

I'm right in the middle of fitting an onboard air system to my Defender, and for a receiver I used the easy way out and bought a truck air brake cylinder. I found one off a Ford Trader that holds about 10 or so litres, had a mounting bracket intact and is exactly the right size to fit up under the left rear wheelarch, just in front of the taillights. Cost was $30 including the mounting bracket and the existing drain valve.

I already had a Sanden SD508 compressor off an old Sigma, so I'll just piggyback that off the existing A/C compressor. Pressure switch, check/unloader valve, pressure gauge etc so far has cost me $130, so (fingers crossed) I should have an 8cfm system for under $200. Now watch the wheels fall off this little exercise!!
