it is 50 amp according to what he said, wire it self is about 6mm thick of very fine strands with out the insulation.

Hi incisor, the reason I asked was it 6mm automotive is that Australia in one of the few countries in the world that does not have a wire size standard for automotive wire and when someone states that they are using 6mm, in most cases it is 6mm automotive and is actually 4mm.
The way you determined the size of the wire is by far a more accurate means of determining the current capacity of the wire.
Why no standard has been set is beyond me. This cause loads of problems and in some cases can be down right dangerous.

4 guage to an anderson plug is like original battery cables. (and on some cars its thicker than original) it is overkill.....but looks great. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

8 guage cable is thick enough for running a trailer and easier to run through (under, inside, outside, over,etc.) the vehicle.

run 8 guage from battery to a terminal, then thinner wire for running spotties and other accessories. in other words you dont need to run a cable back to the battery for each accessory.

Hi DEFENDERZOOK, for long runs around a vehicle, heavier cable will help reduce the voltage drop caused because of the distance.

Hi again DEFENDERZOOK, you can go both ways and it will work.

I recommend nothing smaller than 6 mm Automotive wire ( 4.5mm square ) for connecting two batteries together under the bonnet.
This will do the job and the distance is not going to cause to much voltage drop. 7mm marine or 8 B & S would be better. I use 8 B & S myself.

For running cable to a battery in the rear of a vehicle or to a trailer,
6 B & S would be preferable but again you could still use 6 mm but the voltage drop would be such that the battery would take ages to charge.

Now if someone wanted to go to 8G then thats their business but it would allow the rear battery to charge quicker.

My 50cents worth.
I only did this 3 weeks ago.
8ga cable from the Aux battery to the rear. Tucked it into some spiral wrap and cable tied it to the top of the chassis.
I also ran the same sized earth/neg from the battery to the rear and it is my grounding point for all the accessories.
Not needed, but helps for a good earth.

Then i put a 50amp breaker at the battery end incase of a short if the cable was to get snagged.
Then at the rear i split the cable and it went into a 4 way fuse box for blade fuses.
from there i ran the 2 cigg lighter sockets, Narva power socket and Aux lighting.

Aux battery is charged via a Rotronics battery charger and i should have pulled it out as it is a ****a.

I'm building a Jaycar one and i'm going to see how that goes.

So thats how i did it. i'll take happy snaps if anyone wants them. Be quick my Disco goes to Disco heaven on Sunday....

Some happy snaps of my install of Traxide Tronics SC40 and cabling down to anderson plug at rear of vehicle and a separate circuit to a accessory socket in the cargo area at the back of the disco for work light and fridge/cooler.

all parts bar the accessory socket purchased at EXCELLENT prices from Traxide Tronics. The man is an absolute pleasure to deal with and more the happy to answer and questions you throw at him. Pretty dam impressed i am. BTW there is a link to the Traxide Troncis website in the Campertrailer area of the weblinks section of the site.

Incisor, that accessory socket at rear inside is that a cigarette lighter type plug? Where do you get them?. Neat fit .
