S3 1977 SWB Gearbox & Transfer box help

    Hi All

I am restoring a 77 SWB landrover and want to know what to do about the gearbox and transfer box.

the landrover sat for about 10 years in someone's paddock, it started, surprisingly enough, when I picked it up and drove about 200m up the hill, however I would like to know if I should overhaul the gearbox and transfer box ..... or ..... hope and pray that nothing is worn.

I am overhauling and or replacing everything on the landrover and for the sake of an overhaul kit I do not want to hope and pray nothing is wrong with the gearbox?

    Any idea what to do?

    Thanks
    Craig

The best way to make that sort of decision is to drive it and listen for growls or jumping out of gear. It is one of those scenarios where the addage "leave well enough alone" is true.

Of course I would change the oils and importantly drain it through some gauze to see if there are any bits of metal, which is an indication of a need to overhaul. Otherwise I could be tempted to replace the two output seals and probably the main seal on the bottom cover of the transfer box, but that would be as far as I go till i've given it a reasonable drive.

I agree with Diana. Start by draining the oil and see what comes out. If it is rusty water, or has bits of metal in it, plan on an overhaul, although if the only bits of metal are parts of synchro springs, these can sometimes be replaced in situ.

If the oil comes out reasonably clean and without metal, or it there is little oil, but it appears not to be rusty, then I would see how it drives.

Thanks Diana and John ... I will drain the oil and have a look .. I think your advice is the best way to go ... Can I replace the seals without stripping to much of the box if it's required to be replaced ?

Yes. Investing in a workshop manual (and parts book!) might be helpful - see "shop" at the top of this page for a CD that also helps support AULRO.

You will need to take the front and rear prop shafts off to get to the seals, you may also consider doing the diff pinion seals at the same time if there is any leaks from the pinions.

Check and or replace the uni joints at the same time,
