It's mostly in the head. (of the engine, that is)
But it's not just the engine, they were mated to different gearboxes.
200Tdi - LT77
300Tdi - R380
as to your last question. No. Not better, just different.
Hello All
What are the main differences between a 200 and 300 tdi?
i.e. physical and tech differences.
Is a 300 tdi a better motor than a 200tdi?
thanks
Anthony

It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

OK... This is what I can give you off the top of my head.
1 - The layout of the 200 is different for the Disco compared to the Defender.
2 - The 200 turbo runs at 0.7 bar. The 300 runs at 1.0 bar.
3 - The 300 has a better arrangement on the front end of the engine to make servicing easier. The casting is in 2 parts where as the 200 is a single casting.
4 - The 200 uses multiple aux belts where as the 300 has a single belt.
5 - The cam bely is slightly different IIRC.
6 - The 300 has the option of an EGR valve & a couple of other electronic bits on the fuel pump.
7 - On the Defender the 200 sits further back in the engine bay.
Generally, the 200 & 300 are very similar, it's just that the 300 is a little bit more refined.

Mark.
thanks for the replys.
I should be able to tell the difference between the 2 of them now
I assume that the cc's for each engine is the same?
Is the power and torque the same?
Thanks
Anthony

My local LR mechanics reckon the 200Tdi is more reliable.

The CCs are the same (they're basically the same lump of metal) but IIRC the 300 is up very slightly with torque & BHP.... Though not by very much.

Capacity is identical, and power & torque is the same for Discos. Power & torque for 200tdi Defender is slightly lower than the rest, presumably because of the different intake/exhuast manifold and turbo setup. Most parts are more expensive in Australia for 200tdi, some by a HUGE margin. 8O Trust me, this I know!!!

Reliability is a Question in its self.
There is 10 300tdi's to every 200tdi.
So mechanics find more 300 problems.
300's biggest proplem was the timing belt. Fixed on all now i'm guessing (except that defender in kangaroo gnd who has never had a timing belt in 200k)
200's are a great donk. Down on HP but still great.
I'm happy with the one i had and if i do a 200 or 300 in the defender i next get i dont care.
Pricing... 200's i find are not dearer, but mind you nothing major has happened.

A friend of mine recently bought a 300 Def Ute and has also driven my 200. He says the R380 has a smoother box and clutch is lighter, but no worries with either.
