    Roll Bar for Defender

I want a roll bar for the ute, which would sit just behind the cab.
Ideally, I would also like it to be set up so the internal space was a tank for storing compressed air. Obviously the bar would beed to be attached solidly to the chassis.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get something like this built in Brisbane?

If not, how would I go about locating a place that does this kind of work.

    Any advice / comments ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Vlad -- the roof strength (or lack of it) of the Defender is one of my real concerns. I have seen a couple that have fallen over and the A-pillars don't provide much support at all.

I would love to get a roll-bar, but I have not been able to find anyone in Oz who makes them (a real market for someone handy with a welder).

You have the usual suspects in the UK (Safety Devices, Mantec, etc) but I would hate to think what this would cost including freight.

How about we import one for inspiration and get someone to make them up in Oz???:?

    WOW
That sounds ambicious, any fabrication/enginnering place should be able to knock something up for you. But to hold compressed air would add quite alot to the overall cost of it, anything it possible, but be prepared to dig deep for it though. Try the yellow pages an look for fabrication or enginnering.

Noddy .. I'd be interested in importing one over ... could even be cost effective if you have a local manufacturer make up a few .. say 10 or so ... I think a lot of Defender owners share your concern ..

The problem is .. our AU dollar doesn't go far in the UK .. to give you an idea .. you know the ladder on my roofrack which I so majestically stuffed up at Ace's BBQ ... they quoted me for a new ladder landed in Sydney ......... AU$981 ... 8O 8O the problem is not the cost of the item but the shipping.

Safety Devices manufacture the roofracks for the G4 Challenge rovers .. also do roll cages for almost every European vehicle.. http://www.safetydevices.com/oldsite/rollcage.htm

Hmmmm....there was a G4 Defender at the Sydney Motor Show late last year, wonder where it is now? All we need to do is get the specs and go off to a local guy. I wonder whether Safety Devices are prepared to give the specs and drawings

I think it was Jeff Brown who had a Saftey Devices type, made up for the D90 he made.
mal may know where Jeff had his made.

If you're going to get a cage made up you should be looking at running it across the top of the windscreen. This area takes most of the impact in any kind of roll... Remember, when you go over, not only will the weight of the engine pull the front down but in almost all situations there will be some forward motion.

Safety Devices do some of the best cages, they also bolt together so getting one shipped over will be easier than a complete cage. That said, IMO, your best bet is to get someone to fabricate locally.

saftey devices do bolt on and weld up type, depending on your requirements. if you order one make sure you are specific about the body shape you have as they have more variants of the ute type and it may not suit your needs. there would be heaps of people that would make them here, just start collecting photos from lr mags for design and make sure its built to adr standards. NAS style are good. coming up off the front outrigger through the quarter panel, following the windscreen to the other side then back down the the opposite outrigger, spreader bar just above vents, then on a cab chassis (ute) you could have a "x" brace above the roof and then roll bar at the back, all three connected.
    cheers, serg
