Rear wheel carrier.

Thanks everybody. The weekend is nearly here so I can start looking in ernest.
Hopefully soon I'll be able to park up on the beach without having to struggle to hold the door open with my backside, or get slammed by it from a gust of wind!
Cheers and hopefully will see you all on the road, giving other madmen a wave.

Rear wheel carrier

Thanks Chatterbox.
I've had quotes ranging from $950 plus to around $500 so far and some (read none!!!) just don't look worth anything like that price. One latches that damn door open like I want, but the rest don't.
I may well have to resort to a UK supplier but are they trustworthy?
Just have to keep trying and if all else fails I'll copy someone elses!
Alan.

G'day Alan. I bought my wheel carrier direct from Mantec, in Pommieland, & from memory it cost about AUD$500. I've had it now six years, and the only mod's have been adding a rear Hi-lift jack & holder(extra wieght), an HF antenae tuner mount, and having it galvanized for longevity....I must say I'm very happy with it, even comparing it with many others I've seen 'round the traps, It opens with the door, holds the door open easily(even on a slope), doesn't require un or additional latching at any time, and has done countless trips up to and around Lakefield/Palmer River & The Cape from Cairns via the Bloomfield, without drama. The other great feature is you can tighten or loosen it with a shifter.
Mines an '87 County, with no flash new door & I run heavy Disco steels with the widest Goodyear MT's that'll fit!!.
Cheers....

PS, have made a number of enquiries by phone (I pay!!) to 'Rovercraft' in WA, seeing as they are the Scorpion agency, and been dissapointed every time...they seem to have much more important duties to attend to, or just give a sour reply like they'd rather be back in their home country!!!. Who knows why????... 8O

$900 is cheap in comparison to say one for a 'Cruiser or Patrol, as they are nearly double that, but likewise that includes the rear bar wheras like others have mentioned here it's just a bent up piece of tubing.

I know Graeme Coopers in Sydney make one for both Defenders and Rangies (Rangie one with rear bar is about $1K). Would like to get one but a bit poor at the moment. The rear bar on mine hangs out too far and catches off-road

Got a Bearmach carrier from Karcraft last week. $440 (incl GST)

Currently fitting it as we speak. First impressions are that they are very well made with a clever design.

I could almost hear my rear door sigh when I took the spare off
