300 TDI Conversion to 1988 RR?

    G'day Guys,

Currently, looking at putting a 300 TDI motor and ZF Auto into my 1987 RR.

Anyone got any experience in this project?

Its just a matter of taking out the V8, and putting in the Tdi...nothing to it, no modifacations need to be made. The Tdi and the V8 have the same bellhousing and engine mounts.

As for the ZF, its just as easy, same mounts, etc. All you need to change is the floor shifter, which shouldnt be difficult. The fact you already had an auto in it, ita just a matter of changing the T-Bar and the indicator plate (P R N D 2 1 to the P R N D 3 2 1)

If you dont already have one, just get one from the wreckers, from an early 90s Rangie or a mid 90s Discovery.

Presumably (for the sake of information only because no Pedro I'm not going to do it) changing a 3.9 out from a 94 Rangie would be more problematic ?

What does the ECU control in these vehicles ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I think the ECU in that model just controls the Fuel injection and ignition system. I think a seperate computer controls the Air Suspension and the ABS (i assume your referring to your Vogue).

I may be wrong, as my knoweledge of later Range Rovers is basic.

Are you suggesting there may be problems with the electronically actuated ancillary handling devices if you remove the ECU?

That's what I'm suggesting - or at least wondering about.

I think there was a 300Tdi option at the time so probably you are right as it would be silly having two different ECU's one for the V8 and one for simply the ancillary devices on the 300Tdi models.

And yes I meant my Vogue.

Anyone else with any genius ideas ?

Timberwolf, i think you are cofusing the 87 rangie auto for the t/filte.
LRH's zf 4spd auto and the disco tdi zf auto are the same with minor internal mods so the shifter and pattern are identical.

I didnt think the ZF came out that early...I thought they were still using the Borg Warner 3 speed auto (they stopped using the Torque-Flite long before '87)

The fact LRH said he is putting a 300 Tdi and a ZF suggests he hasn't got a ZF in it already.

    G'day Guys,

The ZF came out from MY - first of the EFI's

My 1987 built RR currently a 3.5EFI with ZF auto / LT230 transfer box.

What I am going to put in is a 300 TDI with its ZF auto / LT230 from a 1997 Disco I have purchased as an accident damaged vehicle.

I like autos - especially with a 300 TDI, the ZF is the same on both motors - just the bellhousings are different.

    HTH.
