Lucy, that is normal. Hot to you is not hot to Machinery. Oil is quite OK up to 100C or even 130c. You would be badly burnt if you touched something that hot.
If you can touchj it ,the temp is only 65-70 c.

Off for a drive, happen to touch the metal part of the gear shift lever on my 1995 V8i Auto Disco when I discover it to be very hot. Not hot enough to blister, but hot enough that I can't hold it. Then discover that the plastic cover with the gear position indicator is also bloody hot!
No other problems, appears to be performing perfectly otherwise, no difference as to whether high speed cruising or rock hopping, fluid levels are normal (waited overnight for everything to be cool, checked while idling in Park and Neutral.
Any ideas? Is it going to be expensive?

I'd go along with what Philip says too as it does get quite warm on a long run, especially on a hot day...
However, if you're feeling a little paranoid, there's a couple of things you can check:
1 - The level & condition of the ATF. Check the level on the dipstick & while the dipstick is out, have a quick smell of the oil. If it smells burnt (like burnt toast) then it has been overheating.
2 - Check to make sure you haven't got any crud in the radiator fins.

Its probably just down to the lack of insulation, to shield the cabin from the heat of the transmission. The area around the transmissions in early Discos and RRs always got quite hot.
Same with my 97 V8 auto Disco.
Bruce.
My '95 Tdi Disco auto is just like yours!
I checked my fluid et al and all was good. I thought the selector position panel was hot due to a combination of the poor heat shielding from auto/engine and maybe the actual bulb for the illumination was adding to the temp.
I am glad this heat is not a prob. I tend to be a little pananoid about my new Disco (new for me anyway).

Youd be quite concerned if you had an early Series LR...the transmission tunnels and sometimes the floor got too hot to touch after about 30mins of driving...and there usually wasnt anything wrong with the transmission...although, the exhausts proximity to the floor was probably partly to blame.
