that just sounds like the sender unit is out of wack.
you need to remove the sender unit and adjust the float to give you the full level up top and the empty when its empty.
i set one on my old car once and i knew exactly how much fuel i had.... as soon as it hit the red line the engine would stop.
it was spot on.
if the sender units are solid state then the reading will need to be set using resistors in line with the sender unit to correct the reading on the guage.

I did not even know there was a warning light (I have 300TDi). I think it has been run dry before and I don't remember any light coming on.
I have a spare tank and as I posted here the gauge is really out of whack but advice here led me to believe fixing it would require remaval and draining and farting around and I really can't face paying for that.
ps I know running a tank dry is asking for injector trouble and would not do it myself - I always work off the tripmeter in conjunction with the fuel gauge - but the previous owner was less anal than I.

where is the sender unit on yours?
is it on top or on the side?
does it have a drain plug in the bottom of the tank?
