You're comment about the not dodgy tappets reminds me of that tv ad where a ZB Fairlane arrives at a mechanic - i think it is for cold tea??

"It's a radiator hose but you'll leave here with four new tyres you didn't
    need etc...." says the mechanic.

    makes me laugh

Tracking down a minor fault, (an intermittently failing spark plug), one local greaseball was going to change all the plugs @ $8 ea, all the leads @ $25 ea, the dizzy cap, rotor AND a send out (by tilt tray, return) to a specialist injector bloke to clean 'em for $500.....said these Euro things were really expensive to fix but all this may not be the prob, could be the computer or the airflow or........

He didn't get my business and I changed the plugs myself.

    Good isn't it.

    Cheers, GQ

    Mate I agree with you
I think most of the 'mechanics' around here view anyone who doesn't drive a holden or ford as rich people just moved to the area. Drive in with the L/R and they wipe there hands together ,come in spinner. As far as servicing goes, thats why I like the diesel simple. When I can't work out a problem I just tinker with the pajero then apply it to the rover. Its just the electrics that are over the top.
I even tried the 4wd experts in Ballina, when I got around to fixing the waterpump leak it had, I broke one of the plastic bung plugs that sat atop the thermostat housing, I remember having read a post that you can replace them with brass ones. Capital didn't know what I was talking about, for either the plastic or brass ones, Ballina 4wd(next to Bunnings) '...we'll have to order those in' I gave up and sourced it myself from plumbers supplies.
I know what you mean we can't just jump in the car and drive up to Brisbane to see the real experts.
Thats what makes this site so good everyone is prepared to assist.
