Discovery wont go into low range
Hello all. I have a 93 Discovery V8 auto and it won't go into low range. The t/f gearstick feels as though it gets to the end of the travel. However, by holding pushing it forward low is there, in reverse only, and disengages under load. By the way I changed the oil in the tf box today and about 1500ml came out, subsequently the box was refilled to the filler plug height.
Has been in low range regularly until this problem and l/r gearstick feels quite sloppy.
Do you or does anyone know if there are external linkages or does the stick go straight into the t/f box?
I'm thinking but I may be wrong, that if I can access what's under the centre console (by removing it) I may find a selector which needs tightening, refitting, rebushing etc. I think the box itself is okay, as its very quiet and there's no slap in the driveline. The oil change showed nothing awful. This aging Disco is still amazingly very tight generally and still feels like new, relatively speaking. Thanks people for you help.

Mmm Strange....
stupid question did you try putting it in LR while the auto was in neutral?
otherwise try a jammed linkage...

There are linkages that activate the gear selection as well as the centre diff lock. Chances are that something has come adrift there or is just out of adjustment. Whilst the gearshift mounts to the geabox, all the linkages are external. Should be an easy fix, but access might be a bit of a fiddle.

Thankyou for your comments. No it wasn't in neutral but it's a fair question.
I'll get under and have a look before I start removing things but I feel it's in the selection. It's just not seating right, a feel thing. Cheers, GQ

Try getting low and reverse again( auto in neutral) and drive back 10
or so meters. transfer case might be wound up tight this will un-wind it.
you wont have much luck getting to the top of the box from inside
the car, just had my interior out completely. there is some room
if you drill out a few rivvets.
my 93 v8 auto dosent have this problem, but it does
jump out of low just after selecting it, one really good
firm shift again and she dont come out!!
c how ya go

When I removed my centre consul and un rivetted the cover, ( it give you good access from above)I found the selector had a casing around it and it was full of MUD!. I cleaned it and shifting was easier. I also cleaned the linkages of all the accumulated crud..

Haven't got in there yet but and thank you for your help, the tf gearstick is as loose as... It moves very easliy from 4WD high to neutral but doesn't select neutral, that's a push a bit further. Rivetted plates and covers sounds typical, I had a Triumph 2500PI once and that was real interesting underneath! Thanks guys, and will keep you posted as to my next move, but from what I've learnt courtesy of your posts, I'm going to go in thru the console. Which isn't a bad thing. In there I want to run aircon to the back and locate a dodgyspeaker wire, so this is probably timely.

Thanks, seems as thou I found a good bunch.
A few quick personal replies and thank you: (Can’t see the board when writing)
sclarke: I learnt to drive in an Austin 1800 sedan when I was 12, amazing car, you’re a case.
D200Tdi: Good I know what I’m looking for.
Discowhite, phil: Was that easy or not to pul out the interior, and why, just curious.
Rovernaut: I’m may be guilty of neglect, the disco does a lot of work, but my maintenance could be better, did the pads recently, how easy is that, real calipers with pistons!
Thanks gents

Note to discowhite phil
Just re read your post. Thinking back, this symptom was there for a while before it stopped selectingi, didn't really pay much attention to it as its a fiddly crash gearbox anyway. KEep an eye on it. Chhers GQ
