I was working on the car all day and being an idiot I have flattened the batteries! I have 2 batteries in a 300tdi do you guys think that the 40 dollar supercheap 1.6 amp 3 phase charger would be enough to charge them or would I need something a bit more beefy? Or could I even get jump leads and fire the old girl up using my missus Mini Cooper (bmw) thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Mark, if this is your everyday drive, then as Dave posted, with the mini's motor running, connect the jumper leads, and leave the mini running ( preferably on a high idle ), for around 2 to 5 minutes.
Then start your motor.
If this is a vehicle that gets infrequent use, then it wouldn't hurt to get the battery charger anyway and use it to maintain the batteries.
The small size of the charger is actually good for your batteries but it will take a L-O-N-G time to charger them, but again, this type of slow ( low current ) charging is still very beneficial for any lead acid battery.

Even a very small charger will work with big car batteries, it will just take a long time to fully charge them but as long as it delivers current greater than the self discharge of the battery it will get there.
A flat battery is a bad thing though, it causes damage inside the battery and reduces it's capacity forever, if this happens a lot the battery life will be shortened significantly. Deep cycle batteries handle this better as they have thicker lead plates but they are also damaged by each discharge cycle.
I fitted a small 20W flexible solar panel onto the bonnet of my P38 which prevents all of the computers from draining the battery no matter how long its parked up for. This came after a complete discharge killed the previous battery and cost me $500
