Emptying the cat of its ceramic matrix won't do anything bad for the power, it's not exactly a highly tuned race engine. In fact a broken cat can cause a significant power loss as the channels in the matrix no longer line up with the outlet. Just make sure you empty it properly. The hollow cat may sound a bit echoey though. I've had to do this kind of "temporary" repair plenty of times in the past. Without post cat sensors your ECU won't even notice. New aftermarket cats won't cost you the earth either, they are a service item after all.
