    Second set of Cats broken

Seems the VERY LOUD marbles rolling around sound coming from the Engine ( D2 V8) was not bigends or the engine imploding as some landie expert tried to tell me.
I always thought it was it was exhaust related. After climbing under the Disco yesterday and holding an extension bar to the left Cat and other end to my ear it, I was 99 % sure it was the cat.
I pulled the pipes today and shook the pipe and yes confirmed the Cat was stuffed. Plenty of large marble sized chunks of cat material fell out when I up ended the pipes. These were rattling around inside the Cat body and they MAKE A HELL OF A NOISE. When it warmed up the noise would slowly go away.
This is the second time now that I have replaced the cat assembly in the last 2 years. Abeit they were second hand units, but I can't believe that it just breaks up that. I haven't hit anything on therm nor is my Disco running hot.
I was tempted to cut the pipe at the cat and bash out the remaining material and re-weld the cut pipe back.
But then the exhaust gases would balloon up in the empty cat container before it exists out the smaller pipe outlet again.
Would this cause a power loss?
If I put a straight through pipe, knowing my luck I would get pulled up and then the question of no cats would need to be explained.

Emptying the cat of its ceramic matrix won't do anything bad for the power, it's not exactly a highly tuned race engine. In fact a broken cat can cause a significant power loss as the channels in the matrix no longer line up with the outlet. Just make sure you empty it properly. The hollow cat may sound a bit echoey though. I've had to do this kind of "temporary" repair plenty of times in the past. Without post cat sensors your ECU won't even notice. New aftermarket cats won't cost you the earth either, they are a service item after all.

    A contact

Mario, get in contact with Performance Exhausts in Vermont (Trade Place, I think) and have a talk to Dave. Could be 98704977.

Generic cats fit D2s just fine.

    Cheers

Hi Pete, thanks for that. I have a second hand complete pipe coming from Ken" Outback1", so they will get me out of trouble for the time being.
I am thinking of gong straight trough though, looking at the honey comb that came out of mine and seeing some of the tiny holes melted together, me thinks they must restrict flow and rob performance, and with these small V8s driving a heavy carcass around , any performance loss is not really scarificable.

    P.S you a Father Yet??????

When cats get hot, the ceramic can melt, fuse, and cause a blockage, until the engine pressure can clear it.
I had this happen (in a different vehicle) at 100km/h - loss of power after a long ascent in a high gear. When things came good, I caught a glimpse of a shower of red-hot ceramic spewing out the exhaust pipes.
Turns out I had spark issues with the car in question, causing it to run rich for long enough to overheat the cats.
