PTO driven compressor ?

I see Defender200Tdi is going the air-con powered option, but I have heard that there is another option - the PTO powered one.

Firstly, a silly question - how does one use the PTO on the 200Tdi Defenders ? There's no lever etc for this purpose - as you can see I know not much about PTO's.

Theoretically I would think a PTO could drive a compressor at a great rate of knots to use air tools, inflate tyres etc very quickly and w/out the need for an air tank (reservoir).

Any ideas :?:

(apologies if there have been posts to this effect before, but I couldn't find any).
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Hi Vlad
To drive a compressor via a PTO,you would first have to buy one, they bolt to the transfercase and are operated via a gear lever. You can run the PTO whilst driving or whilst stationary. To use it stationary you place the transfercase in the neutral position. To control the speed of the item being driven, you can vary the engine revs and gear selected.
Series Landys had all sorts of "farm implement" items that could be powered via the PTO, -Bench saws,PTO shafts coming out the back like a tractor, winches(both shaft and hydraulic) a hydraulic pump/tank for powering farm hydraulic equipment.
An aircon or even a proper compressor can easily be setup under your vehicle. The finding of the actual PTO could be the main problem

Vlad,

Maxidrive have a PTO unit that bolts to a LT230 transfer:

If I was to go to the trouble and expense it should also drive a winch.

I dont know how a compressor fits but a chat with Maxi-drive might shed some light.

The 4x4 mob in QLD that sell ex army and other stuff who advertise in Just 4x4's (i think) sell ptos for LT 230s at aroun 700.

OI is correct about it wanting to drive a winch aswell for that type of coin.

Much cheaper and easier to pick up a Sanden 508 and a kmart airtank.

Could be done for about $300 or less with a bit of scrounging.
