Premium/Ultimate

Just wondering if anyone has tried 95ron or 98ron fuel in their 3.9l Disco? Did it get better economy and distance etc.

From talking to a m/bike rider (winaje from the DII forum), the BP hi-octane fuel is better than the Shell. The Shell was a better product till about a year ago, but quality has fallen. Not that anyone may notice in a Land Rover, but m/bikes I suppose are more sensitive to these things, as are their riders.

Personally I found Hi-octane fuel effective in the SIII 2.5 Land Rover , but pretty much useless in the 3.5 EFI Range Rover .

I run vortex gold in my landy, I think its 95ron. Optimax makes it run a little hot and I have heard its not good in carbied cars but ok with injection and high compression.

My 3.9 is 9.35:1 so pings on normal ULP

I run my bike on BP Ultimate when I get the chance, nearest BP servo is 50km away. It runs really well on that.

From what I have read in bike mags, its the ducks guts for keeping your fuel system clean

Dude when i first got my 3.5efi rangie i was getting about 350ks to a tank, i done the exhaust and started getting firgures of around 400Ks

Then i started running premium and was getting and extra 50-60ks per tank 8O i was hittin 500ks per tank during highway driving 8O

Now my rangie is completely ****ed with big arse tyres and **** and even when i run premiuim I only get about 350Ks highway driving and 300ks onroad but with regular leaded I am lucky to get 250Ks ever 8O

So my verdict on the ultimate is for me it works

Umm, surely any better economy (if there were) would be more than off-set by the price premium of the higher octane fuel :!:
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

If it increases range, then the amount of time spent in the bush increases.

You Tdi people just don't understand, you take range for granted. We poor petrol folk must economise and still we can't get out of the poverty rut.

premium unleaded is designed for High output motors,
ones with high compression. cars with 9.5:1 comp ratio and higher.
optimax and bikes dont mix cos its a very dense fuel.
BP fuel has been proven to give more HP than shell,
add nulon topend cylinder lube/ octane boost and its equilevant
to if not better than BP100 race fuel and certian VP fuels.
this is from years of dirt track experiance.
my 3.5 disco dosent run any better or get anymore k's
on pulp than std fuels. comp ratio 8.43:1.

I use BP ultimate in my dunga and it's a much cleaner and better running engine than before. I still set my ignition timing to reguar for trips where I can't get premium.

Optimax, I keep hearing bad stories about the stuff and burning out valves, etc.. so I err on the safe side and strick with BP.

Weird about Optimax as the Mazda pings on just about everything else but Shell as to why ..... I never bothered to find out... just does. Best I can get since it's only a 35L tank with Optimax is around 500~530k bubbling down the freeway and about 350k in the 'burbs though I cane it a bit.

The mutant.... ahh the mutant.... 70L of premium lasts about 300k bubbling along on the freeway and 70L of premium about the 'burbs lasts about 50ks though again I give it what it deserves.....heaps.

Mine are both carby motors though so to a degree they tip the same amount of fuel in whether it's premium, super or 'povo' unleaded and neither run temperature hot. It is said that motors with management can calculate the difference in the fuel types by the O2 sensor on the exhaust, enabling a much leaner cruise mixture. However around the 'burbs about the only difference would be the motor being a little more agile.
