TD5 NOT STARTING and the Strange Cause

I did a house call to a client with a broken down D2 TD5. Problem was it would not start. I put diagnostics on it and all EMS codes related to old uncleared fault codes. The fuel pump was working. Trying to crank the engine showed crank voltage below 10 volts. I cranked over very slowly 1/2 a revolution. I put jumper leads onto it and tried to crank and it was cranking a bit faster, then again die and hardly crank. I never discovered the reason, an time limited I had to go. The owner bought a new battery and fitted it tonight after work and just phoned me to say the Disco is running and he has found the cause.

Here's the reason. The idler pulley bracket ERR6949 had sheared caused by the pulley bearing seizing, this then locked the fan belt and seized the engine preventing it from starting.!
You would have thought with the cranking torque of the TD5 it would ripped the belt.

    Go figure

    Regards,
    Mario
