hand winches

us city folk dont have the pleasure or opportunity to get in them situations.

i would love to be out where the roos roam....hitting them would not be fun at all...downright dangerous.....but just to get out of the city every now and then......


looks like i will have to wait at least another 15 years before the real opportunity arises....


back to winches.....hand winches have more uses than electric winches and are a lot cheaper.....but if you had an electric winch you wouldnt think twice about using it....all you gotta do is press a button.


with a hand winch you gotta unpack everything set it up and then work hard to use it. then you gotta pack it all up again.


if you had a hand winch you would make sure you didnt need it due to the amount of work and effort required to use it. but for practicality you cant beat a hand winch over an electric winch.

i got neither so i drive extra careful :oops:

please explain... :?

Can use it for pulling in any direction not just forward.

Can use it for other jobs like lifting / dragging / panel straightening...

coffeemaking...(oh, alright, they don't make coffee).

You live in Sydney I'm guessing??? I have had to use my hand winch on numerous trips when I lived at Sydney. It may be hard work, but you can pull your vehicle from any direction eg - sideways or backwards. An electric winch can only pull you forwards, not always going to be possible!

BTW, take a couple of other vehicles with you. Everyone always says they won't use a hand winch, but when the time comes they usually get in and help you! :wink:

I have used my Warn to pull me forwards and sideways, lift, drag and staighten panels... and it is possible to pull a vehicle backwards with a front mounted winch - it does require a few snatch blocks but is possible..
for the extra couple of hundred $$ for a second hand electric - i would choose and electric over a hand winch ANYDAY... plus as mentioned, you can always use your hi lift if you have to

what about the Brawn Port-A-Winch? Are they the best of both worlds? Anyone know what they cost and are they any good?

I've often thought that active clubs should buy gear like this for use by members rented out so that the cost could be shared. Maybe Kennards or Coates Hire could rent them out.

Makes for some possible worry about litigation if something goes wrong. eg - have to train them properly before they take the item etc.

Agree with the club idea though, at least you know your members are trained, and your club already has PLI. :wink:

The PLI is a valid issue.

Although I have rented those most dispicable and blood chilling of implements the chainsaw and the 12" angle grinder from tool rental places and have never been quizzed or trained. Interesting question.

I'd be interested to know how you can pull a vehicle sideways or backwards with a front mounted winch.
