does ithave fuel pressure
Michael.
Hi all,
I hope someone can give me good advice here!! Last night my 89 Rangie 3.5efi engine cut out at speed, felt like it was out of fuel, it was on empty but no fuel light had come on yet, got someone to bring me some fuel, put it in and it did start but was running crook as a dog and would not idle, was missing badly and had a major major flat spot and was blowing brown and sometimes very rich looking smoke out of exhaust. I drove it to a servo, which was a bugger as it didn't like acceleration either under load and put some new cleaner fuel in. Same problem still and the plugs are getting fowled up really bad and as soon as I clean them they get fowled again. Now the old girl wont start at all.
Any ideas PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our Disco is in the panel beaters still and I need to get this fixed!!

Michael.
what fuel were you given?
what was in the container before the fuel went in there(like was it clean?)
For EFI motor doing that..... hmmm... loose/dirty connection on the Air flow meter or the thermo time switch.
Over fuelling is normally a result of the computer getting the wrong 'squignals' from it's monitors.
If it was the pump it wouldn't start or over fuel I would think.
And this is coming from someone who put hellspawns' ignition leads around the wrong way this arvy after cleaning the dizzy cap and installing a new set of points. Found it odd that she refused to rumble into life as usual instead gave two enomous explosions. Duh !ops:
sounds like its gone into limp mode.
pull out the engine fuse or disconnect the battery to reset the ecu and see if this makes a difference.
then get back to us.
Hi Shane

Seriosly Though
I would get your fuel pressure regulator checked.I once had a similar problem in a XE efi ford, the regulator gets a tad sorry for its self and lets the fuel pressure back to the tank, firstly from time to time then fails properly.Could explain your troubles on that hill.

Gday Guys,
The fuel container had Premium Unleaded in which was only about 2 weeks old and we then filled the tank with more Premium. I checked all possible electrical connections that I could find, all seemed ok and I undid the fuel line at the choke injector and there was heaps of pressure there.
My father in law (who thankfully towed me home at 0230 in the morning) also thinks it may be the ECU. Do I only have to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU or do I have to leave it disconnected for a certain amount of time. I mayt have access to a second hand ECU out of a Rangie that now has MOTEC, so I may just put that in and see how I go!!
Keep the ideas coming as this may not work tomorrow!!

Andrew you could be right it was behaving pretty dismally on Sunday!!
different cars different ecus.....make sure they are the same...i dont know what differences there are between them.
also make sure you have your radio codes handy.
disconnect for about 30 seconds.
good luck
Well I put the other ECU in and a complete set of new plugs, used contact cleaner on the air flow meter and other plugs that I couyld find and started her up, she started but is still doing the same thing, I am just about sure it is just fowling the plugs really badly but what would cause this!!!!!?????
Any more ideas, next move for me is to take it to the service centre and fork out the big bucks, again!!
