    Brake Pads

    Gentlemen

I would have thought it'd been done before, but a search revealed nought.

What's the general consensus of opinion on aftermarket pads. The stealer claims the oem jobs are soft, as are the rotors and non-genuine will cause problems with increased braking distances, premature wear and even ABS headaches due to high pitch squeals ... hmmm?

Is anyone aware of soft compound aftermarket jobs which work well.

$140 for oem is a typical ripoff. Have been quoted $70 for lookalikes but a tad nervous .....

I've heard that there are trade offs:

The softer the pad the longer the rotor life and vice versa.

What is the correct balance? And what are the trade offs.

My Tdi is very kind on brakes: rotors and pads. Engine braking I guess.

I agree with Michael. My old V8 Disco used to eat genuine pads, fade badly when towing and constantly leave the wheels black with brake dust. I swapped to Bendix pads and solved all three problems in one go. Sure it will probably wear the dics more quickly, but then you can put DBA discs in and be trouble free practically forever (well, almost).

    Brakes

Mine has stock OEM ones, squeel like buggery when their hot, doesn't upset the ABS cos it hasn't worked since i got it. Crook sensors, trying to work out how to dismantle one without wrecking it so i can repair the wires.

I hope you didn't buy the V8i Disco into which I swapped my old Rangie non-ABS rear end. I fitted the Disco rear end (ABS) into the Rangie.

    Why?

The Disco rear end was MaxiDrive equipped.

If you did buy it, the ABS will NEVER work

I fitted DBA Rotors and Bendix pads all round on my Disco. The original stuff was "at service limits" at about 90,000Km.

No dramas after 40,000Km on the new kit. No squeals, stops better and seems to be wearing better.
