    300tdi Rebuilt Parts

Ok so forgive me if I don't know much about engines...

I BADLY overheaded my 300tdi defender, to the point where after I had the hose in the overflow tank trying in vain to cool it a little before turning the engine off...I turn it off, and left it to cool for 5 min. Tried to start it and she woulnd fire. Left it another 20min and she slowly comes to life. I turn it off immediately however.

I phoned my local engine machinist/rebuilder, and he is taking a the head off on the 5th Jan. I know its a given the head is a goner, but he is going to check the bores see how bad they are.

Worst case scenario he said im looking at $4k to rebuild the engine, new head etc, and $1500 for remove an refit the engine.

I plan on getting at least the head myself from TURNER ENGINEERING.
And im guessing im gona need a whole lot more..

Can someone PLEASE tell me what other parts I should be ensuring get replaced?? As I would prefer to make a decent order from TURNER ENG. and save myself some money...as im sure the rebuilder would charge HEAPS more!

    ANY help appreciated!!!

so far ive come up with

    -complete cylinder head
-head gasket and top end gasket set
    -bottom end gasket set
    -vacuum pump,
-pistons and rings x 4 (may have to be o'size depending on honing/reboring amount?)
timing belt kit (what parts do I need ontop of belt? as turners don't offer a kit)
    -water pump?

...not sure which bearings and seals? or anything else'silly question, but does a tappet assy come with a new head built up?

Also...turners or paddockspares for everything apart from the head...from which I hear Turners is the go?

Buying overseas such a large order, well over $1K will attract Customs duties and freight will be up there as well, why not buy in Australia and keep the money here.
I bought my new head in OZ for the same as OS, same with MM alternator, same with gaskets, search around the Forums for posts on this subject, Merry Xmas, Regards Frank.

Dont assume the bottom end is gone, you dont say how many K's so dont go buying rebuild parts until you know the condition of the bottom end.

If you ever overheat an alloy head engine again don't try and cool it down with a hose like you did. Cooling aluminium too quickly softens it.

In most cases of overheating on tdis, after a new head and gasket they are fine. Just make sure you fix the cause of the overheating.

Have you installed a low coolant alarm? It's good insurance against overheating from a lack of coolant (most common cause of overheating). But as noted above, you need to find what caused the overheating.

Looks like it would do the trick. However one advantage to a low coolant alarm (rather than a high temp alarm) is that you should be able to pull over and turn off the engine before it actually reaches an excessively high temp, whereas the temp alarm tells you you've already hit a high temp.

It seems from the fleabay avert that you may be able to set the T2 alarm range yourself; if that is true then you could set it a bit low to give you time to pull over and turn the engine off.
