    Pintle Hook

Can I attach a Pintle Hook direct to the rear cross member of my Defender Extreme and how strong would this be?

i used 5/8 (15mm) high tensile bolts on my swb with a 15mm backing plate.

best to buy some 16mm or 18mm id hydraulic pipe cut to length and weld into cross member to stop crush to do a proper job that wont let you down under load.

The TD5 chassis, is`nt as strong as the old ones, so I`d make sure you support it with an internal plate, so as you dont damage it.

i have a pintle mounted to my d110 trayback and tow a 8x5 dual axle tralier, electric brakes, aprox. 1800kgs, mon-fri. mine is a 98 model, the rear xmember had squish tubes welded in already(factory). when i took the arb/haymen reece tow bar/hitch off it had some 4mm plate square washers at the back, where the bolts passed through the xmember. i had a 8mm plate made as big as possible with the 4 hole drilled in it, to act as my rear washer. i had a 10mm plate angle made up, that went from hilift jack hole-hole, verticaly as high as the xmember and returned under to pick up the four threaded tabs on the bottom of the xmember. this is bolted up with the four bolts that mount the pintle, four more through the face and four verticaly in the underside. all bolts are grade 8 high tensile. i got the pintle from british off road for $75 it is exmilitary, swivels 360 and has greese niples. it is a bit noisey when towing but all in all is great my trailer runs 750-16's and rides dead level. hitching up by my self is very easy. just open the pintel up center vehilce too ring on trailer and back up till you touch. get out and drop the jockey wheel. works every time with no one to guide me. i think there are some pics of mine in the galley
    cheers, serg
