Buy a RAVE cd from the "Emporium" ( over on the left there)- the 2002 update disc has the TD5 workshop manual

I am after a Defender 1999 TD5 workshop manual. I have managed to download one (485 pages) but it is in German which does not help me a lot. Does anyone know of a URL where an English version can be downloaded?
Mainly need it because I just bought a lemon and will probably have to do a fair bit of work on it.

Thanks Langie. Is it the disco2rave cd that has the Defender info? I looked at the emporium before searching the web but as the Defender was not mentioned I assumed it was not covered.
Once I am sure which one I need I will order it.
Septimus,
What issue(s) are you having with the Defender?

Issues? well:
50km on the way from buying it in Adelaide water was flying out of the engine bay. RAA towed it to Mt Barker where service centre determined oil cooler was RS. Replaced oil cooler and found two studs on exhaust manifold broken. Replaced studs and ground manifold flat. Replacing mainfold another stud broke so removed manifold and broken stud then reassembled. Cleaned oil out of the cooling system and replaced all hoses to prevent future problem from oil destroying rubber. Took two days to get parts from interstate and a weekend intervened so had to find accommodation for five days.
Finally fixed (bill now $3,700 not including other costs such as $150 for RAA, $165 for tow, $400 for accommodation, etc) and got about 100km down the road to find water squirting past air bleeder on top hose. RAA did temporary fix for what was diagnosed as faulty hose but did comment pressure seemd to high in cooling system. Got to Bordertown and problem recurred. Found a motel for the night and next day got confirmation symptoms indicated compression leak into cooling system. Caught bus back to Melbourne and left car in Bordertown.
Looks to me like the previous problem may have been misdiagnosed and head gasket was fault all along - view supported by fact that old top hose (all old parts with me) has large split probably caused by excess pressure.
Plan on picking car up on trailer Sunday ($319 car hire, $65 trailer hire) and bringing back to Melbourne for repair by dealer of what is guessed to be blown head gasket at best and cracked/warped head at worst (but who knows what else I will find on this "excellent condition" vehicle?).
Hopefully will have it fully roadworthy again by end of April when I am to drive back to Cairns...
Mate, is it unde warrenty??? If not, is there any other specialist Land Rover places around that aren't dealers. I know from when I was in Sydney, that the local guys that specialised on Defenders etc, where better than the dealers hands down, and are able to diagnose and fix faults fairly quickly.
BTW, you said it presurised itself too much. Is the radiator blocked by any chance???
Is there oil in the coolant, or is the oil a milky type colour representing water in it???
Isn't the oil cooler part of the radiator??? So when they say they replaced the oil cooler - was that the radiator???
How was their oil in the coolant - unless that was where the split was - between the oil cooler side and the radiator side???
Sorry, just trying to work out what was happened, compared to what the mechanics have tried to fix on it??? I had a similar problem with my 93 Defender, and it was just blocked cores in the radiator. $450 later I had the radiator back in re-cored.
The only thing I'm trying to work out is why there is so much pressure if they are saying they replaced the oil cooler, when to me the oil cooler and the radiator are one and the same, just seperated slightly???
Unless the newer Defenders are set-up different to mine???
No warranty - private sale of a 1999 Defender.
The radiator is not blocked. In fact it was fully flushed to ensure there was no oil in it when they did the repair. The oil cooler is actually a seperate unit inside a housing bolted to the side of the engine. Oil passes through it and it sits inside a water bath fed from the cooling system.
I intend taking it to Stewart Webster in Frankston (near where I live until the end of next month). They were LR Dealers but not any more under the new arrangements. However they have LR servicing capability.
As I understand it, you can get compression leaking into the cooling system which will then put that under much higher pressure than it is designed to handle. This will lead to blown cooling house and loss of coolant. I guess I was lucky in that the hoses were all new so they held the pressure but coolant was forced out past the bleeder.
I am no mechanic, not even a hobby one, so I am saying all this based on observations of work done during this week and discussions with the RAA guys.
No experience with them but there's also Ritter Automotive and Vitesse Developments in Melbourne
I didn't think a Td5 head could be machined.

Peninsula Rangie is Frankston is the man to see. He is cheaper than the dealers and has years more experience than the young mechanics at any LR dealer..
His name is Peter... I have no financial ties with them, but he used to do all the servicing on my TD5 Defender, until I cracked the sh1ts with its poor build quality, and he always offered good service and advice...
Thanks for that landy-man. Strangely after the earlier post from cewilson I looked to see who else was around and came across Peninsula Rangie. Was going to ring him on Tuesday morning so feel more confident in doing that now.
