Newbie Discovery Questions

Following initial research into the Discovery, especially this quote from http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~lloyd/4/Lan...over/Discovery/

"...the Discovery made use of the coil suspension, engines and full-time four wheel drive transmission of the Range Rover (Classic) of the day."

Does this mean that the first model (1989-1998?) was also built on the Range Rover chassis...I'm trying to find out whether it has a separate chassis/body like Range Rover and Series/Defender models?

As I said, a very newbie question but...

Yep, Discoverys from the first model (1989) right up to the Series 2 Discovery (2004) have a Classic Rangie Chassis. Basically, those Discoverys are a classic Range Rover chassis with a Discovery body. That is a Ladder frame chassis...which is seperate from the body.

The new Series 3 Disco has a completely new design (combination of ladder frame chassis and monocoque body). Very tough.

    "discovered" the "Discovery"

    timberwolf_302,

    Thanks for the speedy reply!

I'd only just recently been looking at getting an early (to 1984) 3 door Range Rover or other 3 door chassis based Land Rover and have only "discovered" the "Discovery" 1991 3 door models...this has given me greater choice if my finances can stretch that far...

3 door Discos go for nothing you can't give them away, I saw one at the aucitons the other day that was 1/2 tidy it went for $3800. If your in Brisbane the young bloke across the road has a 4 door early 80s Rangie on LPG, body lift, 4.3 stroker engine, extractors etc, needs a tidy up, for a similar price, basis of a good truck.

    shaunp,

Thanks for that info on the Disco prices...makes them much more financially viable than I had expected.

Unfortunately I'm on the Mid-North Coast of NSW and am after the 2/3 door models...Range Rover, Discovery & Defender.

    regards,

    Gentlemen,

Would greatly appreciated if you both could come to some similar figures on used prices...I've looked at "The Redbook" guide but would be very interested to know auction prices.

I would be prepared to travel interstate to get a good price on a "1/2 decent" vehicle. Any comments from other forum contributors most welcome & appreciated!

    Remaining hopeful,

For Disco's it depends on whether it is a V8 or a Diesel (200 Tdi to 1994 and 300 Tdi 95 for a 3 dr). Stopped importing the 3dr after that. V8's will generally be cheaper in that range. 5dr will naturally be more sought after but a 3dr is a collectors item now and will fetch a reasonable price if it has a diesel engine.

The older a LR the firmer the price because you are in enthusiast territory.

Mate $3800 that's what it went for and a 91 Rangie got Passed in at $5k and a series 2 Disco with 290km on it went for $15k, there are often early Disco's in the Trading post for less than $10K. Most dealers don't want them as a trade in, offer nothing and then whole sale them at the auctions. The mate Leigh went to trade his 2000 model Deisel 100 series Cruiser on a 3.0Di Patrol a couple of weeks ago and the Nissan dealer at Wynnum offered him offered him $19k for a one owner 100 series so whats a 92 Disco that needs a tidy up worth? somewhere less than 10k I reckon. Another mate ended up with the 100 series for 19k rather than let the dealer have it.

I just had look at QLD trading post on line and there were about 10 Discos in there for less than $10k, many were dealers, so if a dealer has one for $8k he paid $4-5k for it. These trucks would not be perfect at this price but they are 10 years newer then a 2 door rangie and offer better long term value I reckon. You would pay $15k plus for somthing really nice and well looked after.
