300 tDi running at aroud 70 degrees??

    Hi all,

I've installed some temparature gauges on my 300 TDi as preparation for pump tweaking.
    Sender units mounted:
Water temparature - Thermostat housing brass plug that I drilled out and mounted sensor in.
Cylinder head temparature - bolt plug in the head on ports side.

Both gauges are reading around 70-75 degrees in normal driving conditions. So I think either thermostat is stuck bit open or it's opening earlier than it should, or my engine doesn't reach operating temparature for some reason.
I'd like to get it to operating temparature, simply because it's a proper way for engine to operate.
I've checked fan coupling and fan rotates freely when not hot.
Factory gauge has always been sitting bit below half way.

What are your toughts? Did anyone have similar issues?

    Thanx!!!

Possibly the oil cooler thermostat stuck open rather than the coolant t/stat stuck open.

Check them both, but I suspect the oil one.

Yep, when it sticks open the engine runs unbelievably cold, won't get to working temp unless it's a stinking hot day.

In my case it was water thermostat afterall. Just changed it today. Waxstat brand. Strangely it looked and felt on the movement as the old one (Waxstat also) so I taught initially it's probably oil thermo, but when I went for test run, it shot up to about 85 on water and 88-92 head temperature pretty quickly, and it stayed there.

Now I can get warm on these "hot" Melbourne summer mornings!!!!

Are those figures that LR accepts as normal, but you just want it colder or is your system having some kind of problems?
