ARB or TJM - Safari or Airflow ?????????

    Hi All,

I've had the disco for about 2 weeks now, taken it off-road, got it muddy, cross-axeled (testing articulation), and put some bush stripes down each side (damn narrow forestry tracks, oh well it was gunna happen sooner or later ) so now its time to start making some additions, and my very first 2 offroad additions will be a front bar and snorkel.

I have always had ARB bars on my previous Defenders and Pajero, with both the Defender Bars carrying winches, and found them to be more than suitable for the task, but on the Disco S1 the TJM bar is winch compatable and you must choose either winch or non-winch for ARB, also never having an airbag equiped 4wd before does anyone know what bar has the better mounting system, as at present I am unsure wether I will be puting a winch on, but dont want to end up having to change bars if I do :? .
Also during my search for a car I saw a few TJM bars that were pushed up or down, sort of not mounted straight, and was worried if this is because they dont have as well engineered mounts as the ARB bars, the other advantage with the TJM bars was the ability to accept a wide range or size of driving lights, which the ARB's seem to have limited space available, I am a big ARB fan with most of their front bars well thought out but looking at others experiences with either.

Now basically the same sort of issues with snorkels, the safari's are bullet proof and well proven but are they a $100 better than the Airflow/TJM units, is everone happy with the fit and design, and do you get much wind noise, this was never an issue in the defender as the car would drown everything else out, but the disco is remarkably quiet even for a TDi and would hate to have the snorkel whistling away all the time,

although they are on the missus's side so maybe it wouldnt matter

no on second thoughts, maybe it is more important, nothing worse than 2 whining units in one car

Going on my previous experiences my preferences would have been ARB winch bar and Safari Snorkel, but given that that will be a bit over $2K, I want to be sure it will suit the disco and have no regrets.

    Regards Glen.

BTW, I dont want any product assasinations just thought from personal experiences.

A lot of the decision for the front bar will be "what you like the look of".

But here are my comments. I have the ARB winch bar on my 04 Disco. I like the look of the ARB bar but if I did it all again I WOULD BUY THE TJM BAR.

My reasons are, the TJM bar has a better approach angle (you hit it less when off-road) and the TJM bar has the winch in a seperate cradle atached to the chasis. My problem with the ARB bar is that when winching it sometimes moves the bar because the winch is atached to the bar and on one occasion it pulled the front of the bar down & caused the rear side of the bar to crease a body panel.

As for snorkels, buy your snorkel direct from a Landrover dealer. For some reason snorkels (they are genuine safari snorkels with Land Rover written on them) are cheaper from a LR dealer than they are direct from Safari. From memory it should be around $380 from a dealer.

I never knew about the Land Rover snorkle. I went with the Safari for my Defender. Havnt' had a trouble in the world with it.

As for the bullbar, I have a genuine Land Rover Steel Winch Bar. But if Land Rover do not make one for yours, I can recommend the ARB product, as we use them for all of our RAAF vehicles.

    Cheers
    Chris

I've got the same series disco as you and have the ARB non-winch bar and Safari Snorkel fitted.

I guess I preferred the look and $ of the ARB bar and I made the choice not to get a winch as I have never needed one before and if I'm heading off somewhere where I'm likely to need one I'll be going with company.

I've no probs with the Safari snorkel and haven't any problems with wind noise but I have no experience with the Airflow units for comparison.

    Thumbs up

    HI,
    Why buy new?
I purchased second hand Safari unmarked for $250 from Triumph Rover Spares and a TJM bar from them for $500. Both unmarked and excellent.
Have just purchased the winch cradle from Ebay. All for under $1000.00

    cheers

I have recently bought a 98tdi airbag disco so pretty much in the same boat, the airbag bars are pretty exxy and i want a winch bar to fit my 8000lb ramsay to. The airflows look ok and nearly half the price of the safari's (bristish 4wd have them for $315 delivered).
