Well, I was talking about the Army, Phil. If it moves, salute it, if it doesn't, paint it.
Cost wasn't the issue. Creating work for post conflict diggers was. Spraying was done in house.
As a civilian? I don't like doing things twice, when I can do it once and do it right.
Probably shouldn't have chimed in.

I changed both sides on my '74 S3. the change must have been after that.
I will check my '78 next time I do the brakes.

Yeah. It was 40 years ago. My son has just gone back in for some reason... The equipment has changed but the bureaucracy hasn't.

If you know what you are looking at you can tell if it is the type with the replaceable collar. Maybe post a closeup pic of the collar.

If it is the replaceable type then replace it.
if not then give it a cleanup with fine sandpaper and try to fit the new seal so it runs in a different spot.
If it leaks then fill the groove with liquid metal, sand back smooth then fit a speedi-sleeve.

that is the removable type. However it looks as if it would clean up like new with some wet and dry.

If that groove is as deep as it looks in the rhs of pic its gunna need some bloody good wet +dry .Rest the collar on something solid a good whack across it in four places with a cold chisel job done .Spindle in the freezer ring in the oven or gas . Peace of mind
